Thanked: 10Thanks for the input, Lynn. With the narrower models would you suggest lathering in a separate dish/on your face and transferring the remaining lather into the scuttle?
Of the scuttles I can find the SRD mother earth is, in my opinion, the most aesthetically appealing! There's just something about that rustic, yet clean look.
I guess I'll just have to try face lathering to see how I like it...

Thanked: 375I have the G5, it's big, but I can put my thumb through the handle and cradle it in my hand with no problem or let it sit on the counter to build lather in it. I fill the inner bowl and resvoir with hot tap water, lay my brush in it, and get a shower. When I'm done in the shower I dump the G5 and refill the resvoir with hot tap water again and cork it. Gives me nice warm lather that makes it to the end of my shaves. Bottom line I like it, I only use it in the winter, guess I could use it year round, (fill it with cold water in summer) or just use it as a lather bowl. Which now that I think of it even adds more value to it, maybe I'll trim back on all my bowls and mugs and just use the scuttle..........

Thanked: 4942I normally face lather whether I load soap from a cake onto the brush or whether I put some cream on the brush. Once I have the lather I want built on the face, I place the loaded brush into the scuttle where the lather is kept warm. Because I put a little water into the upper bowl, I will squeegee the brush a little when I take it out for lathering up again. It usually remains nice and warm. To me, the key for all lathering is to not mush the brush heavily. I use as little water as possible and try to just work the tips of the brush without flinging water all over. I can always add a little more soap if needed or just a touch of water as necessary.
You can lather in a separate bowl if you want or even in the palm of your hand.
To me, the scuttle is mainly to maintain that nice warm or hot lather throughout the shave.
Have fun.

I have a SRD scuttle. What I do, is run my tap until the water is hot then I fill both compartments of my scuttle full of hot water, plug my basin and dump the hot water from my scuttle back into it. Then I re-fill the cavity and set the scuttle in my sink until the hot water rises to just under the top of the scuttle. Then place my creams inside to melt inside.
I let it sit in the sink while I shower, and by the time I get out and get to making a lather in my scuttle it's so well heated that the lather is as hot when I start, as when I end. It works great.
Before I used a scuttle, I would heat up a mug the same way and then put a stainless steal bowl on top of it - it worked like a charm too.David
