Default Scuttles: SRD vs. GP 5

    Gentlemen,

Good evening and thank you for popping into my thread. As the recent joining date may suggest, I am relatively new to classic shaving and have lots of questions so I appreciate any input y'all may be able to contribute. On to the question...

To those who have used both the Georgetown Pottery G5 and the SRD scuttle, how do the GP5 and SRD scuttles compare in terms of keeping lather warm? The measurements indicate that they are *roughly* the same size, but I can't seem to find very much information on their respective volumes.

Until now I've been using a hot water bath to keep my lathering dish, and, therefore, the lather, warm (note: I am currently using a truffle dish with approximately the same dimensions as the scuttles' inner "bowl").

As a side note, I noticed that some previous threads suggested these scuttles were not large enough to lather in them; however, since I have been bowl lathering in a truffle dish of similar dimensions, I do not think I would have a problem. Thoughts?

As always, thank you for your time and consideration.

    -Dave

Default Scuttles: SRD vs. GP 5

I have the GP 5 and it's pretty darn thick...and my water isn't very hot...I still love it, but it's a big hunk of scuttle.

Thanks for the input, ryanjewell. Yeah, I was looking at the dimensions after posting this and found that the G5 and G20 have roughly the same outer dimensions. I found this particularly odd given the G20 is advertised as holding a much larger volume. With that in mind, I guess I may be interested in the #20 model.

My apprehension lies in the size of the inner bowls; while I highly value warm lather, I fear I will eschew scuttles that requires building lather in secondary vessel. I absolutely love the SRD mother earth scuttle but with a 3" inner diameter, I doubt I can build in it. Oh, and I measured the dish I'm using today, and it's 3.5"x2.5" (WxD).

I have a moss scuttle, it works well and has ample room for me to lather.

I can't speak for the SRD scuttle but I do have a G5 and love it. You shouldn't have any problem lathering in it...after all, the point of a scuttle is to create lather in the bowl.

I looked at the moss...I think it was originally intended for face latherers to keep your brush warm inbetween passes...they are nice looking, but not wide enough for my taste. Even their "big Texan" is an inch smaller in width than the G5. The G5 is good for me, but I might want something bigger if I was one of those guys into massive brushes.

Thanks for all your input; it certainly helps.

Per the Moss scuttles, I had originally examined some photos on Sara's website but concluded I didn't want a two piece scuttle. After going back and actually *reading the text*, I found they are, in fact, one piece. The premature elimination stemmed from my concern about a two piece scuttle: I'm worried bowl lathering in ceramic-on-ceramic would eventually result in chips and cracks.

Scookum: Which Moss do you have? I only have one brush - and it's fairly small in diameter, though I haven't measured it - but am concerned 2.5" is too small.

Catrentshaving: The G20s are gorgeous pieces, I'm just worried it would prove unwieldy given it's large exterior dimensions. If I'm correct in my measurements, it's nearly the same size as my 1 Quart Pyrex liquid measure, and that seems a bit large for my bathroom sink...

Ryanjewell: I agree the Mosses seem to have been inspired by face latherers. In fact, the link they provide for instructions directs you to a thread on Welcome to ShaveMyFace.com - The world's most comprehensive guide to the art of shaving and men's fine grooming products, where a user named Chris suggests resting a lather-filled brush in the inner chamber post face lathering.

I have almost all of the scuttles in production and it really matters what you really want out of your scuttle. The SRD and the Moss, in my opinion are best for hot lather. The key is the volume of water between the inner and outer bowls. You can make any scuttle better for keeping lather warm if you put a little water in the upper bowl to act as a heat conductor. Some of the scuttles with larger than 3 1/2 inch diameter bowls are better for lather in if that's what you want but the more heat is lost as a result of the larger opening.

    Have fun

I have the larger one, I think it's 3.5 inches.
