I dont keep a beard or goatee but I find that my dad's old pair of Oster Manual barber clippers work really well on my sideburns.
It kinda feels right using something that old that works so well too!
    YMMV

Oh boy, if you are talking about the type I think you are just make sure they are VERY sharp. I've tried them before and literally felt every hair being ripped out

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of lol. I found a set at my grandparents years ago and tried them a couple times. Like I said before, they needed a good sharpening!

Does anyone sharpen these? I am interested! I got one for a few dollars and tried.... My son tried them on the back of my neck and thank goodness he didn't realize it or I would have told him anything he wanted to know.

There's got to be a way to take them apart and sharpen them, right? I see these at local flea markets all the time but have yet to muster the courage. I don't wear a goatee but have electric (the cordless chargeable Wahl) clippers that I sometimes use on my spud before the Sunday Spud shave. It also has a narrower head that is handy for ear and nose hair. If I could figure out how to make the old manual variety sharp, I'd probably be quite keen to pick one up.
The older I get, the better I was

Is there a forum for these!

Seriously! I would be very interested in any information.

I have worn the goatee most of my life. I must say that that template is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, I would actually pay to see somebody use it, also I think I may have bought every trimmer that I've seen. One of the best. I had may have been the same Norelco that was mentioned earlier, although the batteries won't take a charge anymore. It also came with a little battery powered one that works great, although last year for Christmas I got the whal lithium-ion trimmer. I must say that one is spectacular. Comes with several different heads and an adjustable comb it seems to work very well. But for general shaping. I still use a thin straightedge trimmers are used just for length. I also have a pair of those manual clippers that must've been my father's or grandfathers and yes they do hurt. I guess they have to be very sharp. YMMV.
