Thread: Acrylic/metal shave brush

Have recently gotten back into turning some items, started an Etsy shop on the suggestion of my wife, but thought I would offer a few brushes here, concurrent with my other endeavors. Cost $165.00.

What type of knot is in the brush?

Also, is the not more along the soft with lots of backbone, or nice and scritchy/scratchy with lots of backbone...love the handle.

Just to add to these specs Phrank asked, what's the loft set at as well?

Phrank, hadn't made any lather with it until this morning, when I did, noticed it whipped up a nice stiff batch in no time at all (maybe a minute). It is definitely a soft feel with plenty of backbone, rather than scritchy/scratchy. I know the length of the handle goes against the conventional short and stubby, but this brush keeps the lather in the bowl instead of on your fingers.

Harrywally, the loft on this brush is set at 60mm. Holds quite a bit of lather.

Phrank, missed the one where you asked what kind of knot it is. It's a TGN 22x60 premium silver tip.

Shep56, I've been making brushes for a while now, and I want to give you some advice on your loft. I could tell right off the bat that your loft setting for this brush was far too high. When setting a knot, it's not good enough to just bury the epoxy plug in the handle, you need to go much deeper. For a 22mm badger knot, you should be looking at, at least a loft of 52mm. If it were me, I'd be setting it no more than 50mm.

Your handle is absolutely gorgeous, but next time think about setting the knot substantially lower.

In my opinion, this brush in its current loft setting is unusable.

Here are a couple of the more conventional handle sizes. Will be focusing my time and effort on inlays, since I have been obsessed with abalone and mother of pearl ever since I saw a banjo neck with a tree of life inlay on it.
