Thanked: 1I really like 10 year Laphroaig, a single malt Scotch. I'm just learning about Scotches. Things to consider, do you want it smooth, smokey, rich, etc. when I first started drinking Laphroaig 10 year, it smelled like medicine and the taste was strong. It's a smokey/peaty scotch. I really like it now, especially the after taste. It's a relatively inexpensive scotch.
For scotches, there are some charts that will give you an idea how they may taste. Here is a link to one of them

Good luck in your search.

Thanked: 40It's hard to beat an Eagle Rare 10 yr Bourbon for about $30. Makes for some smooth sipping.

Thanked: 3222If you are looking at whiskeys to try don't forget the Irish whiskeys. Had a run in with Bushmills and found it very smooth neat. For scotch I used to like single malts like Glenfiddich/Glenlivet for smoothness and they won't break the bank. I'll pass on the bourbon.

As a golfer, Scotland is my favorite place on earth. I used to enjoy more peaty single malts like Lagavulin, however, my go to single malt is Macallan 12 year. 18 year is a bit expensive these days but special occasion treat.
I am currently working on two or three Buffalo Trace Bourbon for my evening drink. It's a very nice affordable flavorful example of Kentucky whiskey.

Knob Creek is an excellent bourbon.
A good starter single malt Scotch would be Auchentoshan 12yo or Glenfiddich 12yo. If you want a bit of smokiness (but not so smokey it will blow your socks off) Bunnahabhain 12yo is a great Islay single malt (my personal favorite).

Thanked: 1185Bourbon: Maker's Mark
Scotch: I'm not a Scotch guy but I seem to here alot of good things about Glenfiddich. I had a very good friend that would drink nothing else.
Irish Whisky: Jameson (hands down)The older I get, the better I was

Thanks guys. Lots of feed back quickly. It seems like knob Creek has the most votes. Is that the one in a rectangle bottle with a tan label? The name sounds familiar and I'm pretty sure I have had it. I remember thinking quite fondly of it.
