Apple Ale
In the last year or so, a number of apple ales have appeared in the market around here. Recently,
some of them have even been advertised on network TV. I tried a couple of these name brands,
but I quit buying them when I read the label: "Contains water, natural apple flavor, and caramel
color." That sounds too manufactured for me.
However, a local micro brewery is now offering a "real" apple ale, and it is very good stuff:
"Ace Premium Craft Cider", in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California.

I've tried a few of their varieties, and I'm particularly fond of the "Ace Joker Hard Cider".
It is dry, a tiny bit sparkly, and contains 6.9% ABV. It definitely tastes more like an ale than
the "apple flavor and caramel color" stuff.
It went down nicely with the BBQ baby back ribs, sourdough bread, corn on the cob, and
green beans we had today. Happy Independence Day!"If you come up to it, and you just can't do it, then that's jolly well where you are."

Thanked: 3224Been a long while since I have tried apple cider, iirc it was pretty good cold. My curiosity about it was cured after seeing the condition of a couple of mess mates after they had been on a Scrumpy run ashore in England. Definitely the worse for wear.

I was going to ask the difference between cider amd apple ale. But it appears they are one in the same.

I know this is kind of a Franken-thread, but it was the only one I've found thus far that mentioned cider.
If you have any interest in making your own cider, I could help to point you toward some resources on the internet that could help. I took up cider-making as a hobby a few years ago, and the internet guidance runs the gamut from helpful and accurate to ambiguous and contradictory. One of the supporting links (Hard Cider Scrumpy - How To Make Cider - Mulled Cider - Home Brew | Home Brewing Caps) from the wikipedia article on scrumpy is a fine example of a horrible piece of guidance on the topic.
I'm eagerly waiting to sample part of the six gallons I started a couple of months ago.

Thanked: 101I made some "cider" at home. More of an apfelwien really. I used 1 gallon Publix 100% pure apple juice, 1 packet of Fleichmann's Yeast (bread yeast HA!), and 2 cups sugar. Let ferment until the bubbles stop bubbling, rack a few times and enjoy at your own risk. It is apply and very strong and will rock you. The first couple glasses are slightly carbonated, but after that it is more wine then champagne. It will hurt you.
