Thread: Belgian Beer

I'm gonna get a nice cold Palm from the fridge..
Its not my favorite Belgian beer but I like it a lot better than most Dutch beers.
When I was in the US I did notice al lot of Heineken and some other dutch beers but no belgian beers..

Whats your favorite (belgian)beer? Mine is probably Westmalle in winter and Hoegaarden in summer.

Not really 1 favorite. I like blonde abbey beers. Cinay and Tripel Karmeliet. But really, there are tons of great Belgian beers. When I was a student I used to drink 'Limburgse witte' (6% alcohol) could drink 16 on an evening (sundown till sunup) which is about a gallon and a quart and not be drunk. Too drunk to drive, certainly, but not drunk enough that I couldn't properly walk, talk, and remember everything I'd said

Can't really find it ouside limburg though.
And before any Belgian here starts cracking jokes about 'de Limburg' : Think. Carefully.

All thi talk makes me yearn for the limburgse witte again. I just called my mom to ask her to buy some for when we come over with christmas. hmmm...

As for heineken: the reason they export it is that they can't find enough people at home to drink it.
It is a hit in the US because it beats miller and coors. But then again, so does drinking from a puddle of muddy water

The dutch export heineken, but they import a lot of Belgian beer.

I certainly dont drink Heineken unless I've had too much to drink to notice..

There are too many great belgian beers to have one favorite.. I tried to drink all different kinds of hoegaarden on one day... I didnt succeed and got stuck at "de verboden vrucht"

Love belgium and I'm not going to make jokes about Limburg(dutch or belgian)..would jokes about Belgians in general do to get banned.

Nothing wrong with Heineken. One of the bonuses of some charity work I did was a Heineken factory a half mile down the road where they also made Guiness (what a tough choice to make). Chimay and Hoegaarden are available here with only a little trouble looking, both good.

So why do you bring up Heineken in a thread about Belgian beer (or even in a thread about beer)? A brewer I know calls it "chemotherapy"

I like Grimbergen blonde, too. And something else the name of which escapes me at the moment. Close to Westmalle, a triple. Thick, rich, creamy, almost sweet tasting.

Isn't that the truth...

I've recently become a fan of Stella Artois. It's one of the only decent beers that most restaurants will carry. If I'm drinking to drink, I like to start out with a good beer like Stella, Dos Equis, or Corona, then switch to draw when I can't taste it anymore

Who knows, maybe InBev will have a good influence on Bud.

I am not a fan of Miller or Coors but Hineken is not better, particularly bottled where its characteristic skunky taste, makes it almost undrinkable. Heineken is one of the best examples of a mediocre product with great adverting. Stella Artois may a Belgian brad but it is not a Belgian style beer, it is a light plisner. Also, t is completely unfair to say that there are no Belgian beers in the US. If you do not believe me check this link:

By no means Ebeneezers has a larger selection that the Delirium Cafe, the Kulminator or the Bier Circus but there are plenty of Belgian beers that you cannot get at those places that you can find at Ebeneezers. Furthermore, "recently", a number of breweries in the US and Canada have begun to duplicate the flavors that could only be found previously in Belgian beers. Good examples of such breweries are Ommegang, Unibroue, New Belgium Brewing co and Russian River Brewing co. In fact, many other micro breweries in the US have, at least, one rendition of a classic Belgian style in their lineup. Also, for awhile, the great Pierre, not Thiers ;-), but Celis, founder of Hoegaarden, and responsible for bringing the Belgian Witbier back to life, brewed his masterpieces, in no other place but Texas, US of A. And by the way, his brewery was bought by no less than Miller... ;-)

It's not my favorite belgian, but one I often buy here in the US when I want some is Leffe Blonde. Again, not my favorite, but more affordable than some being a college student and all. Also, westmalle
