IMO, pickles are a failed attempt to improve something awful!
At home I like putting turkey, sharp cheddar, and miracle whip on German dark wheat or sour dough.
Hensley, I used to love fried bologna with mayo or mustard when I was a kid (geez, when did I stop being a kid?) Seeing how it was made on TV kind of ruined it for me. Not that I wouldn't still eat it! I still enjoy some fried sliced ham on toast on occasion.

Leftovers
Nothing beats a good Rueben.
1. Veal cutlet with red sauce and Parmesan on crusty Italian bread at DeRose Brother Pool Hall when I was 16.
2. Camembert, ripe Bosc pear, nutmeg, ground black pepper and freshly creamed butter on baguette when I was 55.
Guess tastes change as you age.
