I love this time of year when all the winter ales come out.
What is the barley wine like? Never experienced it myself
    Kev,
the barley wine style can vary quite a bit but they are always "Big Beers".
I always get a few of the more readily available such as Sierra Nevada and a hand full of Craft versions.
One of the things I look forward to in the cold months.
Here is a link with a few better known ones and descriptions.

Drank two sniffers (about 10oz each) of an American IPA that I brewed. I added three separate hop additions during the one hour long boil and dry hopped it while mellowing in the carboy; packing a 6.5 ABV it resembles the Dogfish Head 60 Minutes IPA. Boy, I love beer. HOG
