    I take back what I said in a recent post about getting a bottle of Laphroiag Quarter Cask. When my local had their 10 year old Cask Strength for just a few dollars more, I picked it up instead. Batch #8 here, non chil-filtered and bottled at a whopping 59%.

    If you like a big, bold Islay, this is like QC on steroids, but in an almost overwhelmingly delicious way. The flavors come bursting out in a treacly, oily explosion of peat, iodine and other phenols. It is briny and somehow even sweeter than QC-I even like a few small sips neat, although it says on the bottle to add twice as much water as whisky.

    I highly recommend Cask Strength. It became by far my new favorite out of all the single malts I've tried after the first sip.

    Oh yes! It's years since I had a cask strength Laphroaig, but last time was amazing! I found a miniature of Jim beam in the cupboard after work yesterday. Weird tasting stuff when you're used to good scotch.

    In honor of the Derby, we are having Woodford Reserve Mint Juleps. Perfect on a warm spring day.

    Drop of Eiktyrne Bloodtub for me this morning. A fairly new Norwegian whisky. I think Eiktyrne might be the first Norwegian whisky ever, but I could be wrong about that. Bloodtub refers to the very small sherry barrel it was aged in. It's very sweet, and at 4 years old it's still pretty firey with a kind of rawness in the back of the throat. In my opinion it's promising, but I think just a bit young. Has some complexity and a LOT of sherry influence, but needs more time to mellow out and get some wood influence too. The slightly excessive sweetness means it goes very nicely with a smoke though, in my case it was warrior plug in a cheap basket pipe this morning. I washed it down with a drop of Bunnahabhain Toiteach.

    I made some new simple syrup with Demarara sugar. That with fresh mint and the Woodford made an in incredible julep. I might need a dram of the Woodford straight after dinner.
