Cold Weather vs Shaved Skin
I've worn a beard for most of the past 40-years. I have never been one for face or hand lotions, especially anything remotely oily. I will use sunscreen but hate it.
My cheeks got pretty rosy after my first week of shaving so I tried Proraso Delicate Skin Aftershave Balm to calm things down. Very nice stuff - not oily, makes the skin feel soft and supple and the vegital scent isn't bad. I also tried Nivea Balm and Lucky Tiger Vanishing Cream; not much taken with either of them. Also, Witch Hazel with aloe feels pretty good. My skin quickly conditioned to shaving; razor sharpness, stropping and shave angles improved and I put the balm aside, now favoring a liquid/alcohol aftershave.
Which gets to the question: do you find straight shaved skin particularly susceptible to cold-weather chapping or roughness? Do you find non-alcohol post shave treatments particularly useful in cold weather? I drive and am outdoors a lot; my face is often exposed to sun, wind and rain. Tricks or tips appreciated.Last edited by MisterMoo; 10-31-2013 at 03:24 PM.

You can use thicker lotions and balms in the winter. And avoid harsher face washes.
If you are outside a lot, use lotion with sunscreen in it. it will help prevent premature aging and skin ca.

Its just starting to cold here in MA but during the summer I quit using AS (I only have TOBS gel and AoS cream) completely because it left a weird heavy feel. I used the TOBS AS gel yesterday and it felt pretty good. It wasn't exactly COLD (upper 40's-lower 50's) but it certainly felt better than it did in the heat of summer!

I find the aftershave balms and lotions helpful on the dry days of Autumn and winter here in the New England area. During other parts of the year I use the alcohol-based aftershaves or just plain witch hazel.
Although, today I used a splash of alcohol-based aftershave, only because it's warm and humid out.You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.
