Thanked: 0Post shave on a college budget: Anything decent at Walmart?
So I'm new to shaving, and have somewhat limited funds and means of transportation. Simply put, is there anything decent to be found in big box stores like Walmart and groceries like Payless?
I've heard that the Nivea Sensitive post shave balm is decent and can be easily found, but is there anything else to keep an eye out for?

My first suggestion would be Nivea. Neutrogena makes a decent aftershave balm, also. Witch Hazel would definitely be something to watch for.
Are you looking for an aftershave lotion? Pinaud aftershave lotion is also readily available and inexpensive.

Thanked: 0Some type of balm and/or moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated. I find that my skin gets pretty dry, but I've also been reading that it could be from using canned shave cream.
In any case, I think that something to nourish my skin would be better right now than something that just smells nice.
Thanks for the advice, will definitely look for the things you mentioned!

Yes!
Van Der Hagen(known as VDH around SRP) deluxe shave soap.
Glycerin(in the pharmacy area) to help make lather(vital ingredient to uberlather).
Shave Secret oil good for pre-shave prep(wonderful eucalyptus smell and menthol sensation).
Styptic pencil for any weepers or nicks.
Yes, Nivea, too.
Thayer's Medicated Witch Hazel w/ Aloe. There's another witch hazel brand as well.
Aveeno moisturizer which is awesome for sensitive and dry skin...oatmeal and stuff in it...
Minus the Nivea and Aveeno, all can be had under $10 US!
That's what I've found so far to be useful and are all in my arsenal. Great to have you aboard!! I wish I started at your age.
Kind Regards,

Thanked: 0Thanks for the suggestions!
I've already received an order from Maggard Razors with Col. Conk's Bay Rum soap, an Omega 49 boar brush, a styptic pencil, and I have some USP glycerin from before, so I think I'm good there.
I had no idea that Nivea would be more than $10..what's in it that makes it cost so much?! Does the shave oil improve the quality of shave noticeably over just a good lather?

No idea on the price of Nivea.
In my experience when starting out, any little help is just that a help.
My first soap I couldn't get to lather worth spit. That's when I found the VDH and I was finally able to make lasting supple lather. I still haven't touched my original soap out of disgust with it.
I had my share of pitfalls when starting...
Have you been watching shave prep and shave videos??

Thanked: 0I've been watching the YouTube vids almost religiously! Geofatboy, Nick's shaves, and a few others on getting a good lather, shave prep, technique, and all that jazz. I'm definitely excited to give it a try
And as for the oil, that does make sense. Even if it helps a little, as a beginner every little bit helps. If my Col. Conk's doesn't do it for me, I'll be sure to get some of the VDH shave soap.
Thanks again!

I pay less than $10 for the Nivea at Walgreens. It is the sensitive balm that is made in Germany. I think it is around a 100ml bottle.

Nivea is good, almost no scent, so I take a little old spice which smells good but imo is to strong and then mix them untill it smells just right for me, makes your scent go further for the $ and also is better on the face than pure a.s. 1 bottle of old spice will scent up prob. 8 bottles of nivea (depending how strong you go. You can also do it with any scent or even essential oils. Also if you go for witch hazel, just get a bottle from any pharmacy (near alcohol an peroxide) for 2$ and it is the same as the fancy stuff. It worked fine for shaves for a couple of centuries, and I dont think a pretty label and 20$ will make much difference
