    Default Aftershave Suggestion

    Hello gents,

I find the balms and creams too thick and result in excessive acne a day/day and a half after a shave. I splashed a dab of pre straight after shave with all that alcohol ontoday and I liked the initial drying the alcohol causes.

    To the point:

what would you guys have to suggest as a nice, not quite bottom shelf Walmart, yet not top shelf, alcohol based after shave. Not picky about scents, nothing too fruity I guess. Something with a nice cooling, menthol type feel?

    Thanks in advance,

    Max

Max, aftershaves as everything else in wet shaving is a personal perference.
IMHO, the best option is to try samples, at least that's what I do.
Then you can try products at a fraction of the original price.
There is plenty of links, vendors and forums that exhausted this subject.
I like what Wet Shaving Products and Maggard Razors offers in terms of samples, give them a try but as always YMMW.

to date, the best aftershaves I have tried are Aqua Velva and Myrsol blue. Menthol-y barbershop goodness

Drop the alcohol... It doesn't do you any good, just hurts your skin...

Unfortunately, I'm low on cash, so I don't know any of the medium\high-end after shaves that are out there... What I do know is how to make my own...
If you suffer from acne, as I do, Jojoba oil is a nice choice. Add some Rosemary oil to it, a few drops of mint or eucalyptus oil, some vitamin E, and you have a nice, refreshing after shave.
If you really want to treat your skin, use Shea butter instead of oil... note that the butter is extremely heavy on the skin, but does an amazing work. I usually use it as a pre-shave balm, that way the razor takes most of it off...

    Good luck!

Best alcohol based AS that Acts as a moisturizer is the new LEA. Has high alcohol but a ton of glycerin and soy protein.

I'd try using an alum block post shave and before the aftershave. The alum block has some mild antibacterial properties that may help with your acne condition. You simply apply it after you final rinse, let sit for a few minutes and the rinse thoroughly off before applying your after shave. If you try it I'd give it 2 weeks to a month to see if it helps with your acne condition.

If you have oily skin and I think most acne sufferers do, you don't really want oily/greasy after shave balms. I think that might contribute to rather than help a acne skin condition.

For a cooling AS I find it hard to beat Aqua Velva Ice Blue even though it is a bottom shelf Wally World product. I apply it and lightly rub it on with my hands till dry and repeat that again. That seems to really bring out the cooling effect.

What I use for an after shave is Witch Hazel; doesn't sting like Aqua Velva, Old Spice, etc., is very reasonably priced & available at most pharmacies, can be scented however you want with a few drops of essential oils and a bottle last a long time.

Smile wife experiment #32a she likes Floid Amber

hmmm, go figure. I learned long ago to not try and predict what she likes, be it wine or anything else. It can only be found by rigorous experimentation. I don't know why I waited till last night to try the amber on her. To my surprise she liked it. I just got a sample size to try. Guess now I'll have to make an ItalianBarber order.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I did and still do cover my face with the styptic pencil after shaving but now I wash it off instead of putting the next thing over it. Got some TN Dickenson witch hazel from Walgreens and I was using aqua velva pre straight shaving and find it still a nice touch after the witch hazel dries. That along with a softer touch has shown good results so far.

Next stop. ..soaps. been using same tub of Taylor of bond since day 1.
