I find the alum indispensabile and it’s inexpensive. My father advised me to use it and for beginners the alum will help you improve your technique as it indicates how the shave went. I like the cooling sensation it gives as I turn the block over (that’s why I don’t use the ones that come out like a lipstick). Let it sit on the red-points or cuts, use styptic liquid or stick if still bleeding. Use for extra grip to stretch skin.
My method is the same as many here: wash off lather, towel to semi dry face and on goes the alum block rub (you can wet the block if face is dry) and turn it over (refreshing) and sit on spots. Leave for 30secs or more, wash face with cold water. Lotion.
