Dickinson's product is 15% alcohol where Thayer's is not UNLESS you order the Thayer's with alcohol. They make both.

I've inherited my father's "Miser" gene, so sure, I'll check this out. Thanks for the heads-up OP!

On another forum, a chemist set out to put everyone straight on what's genuine Witch-Hazel and what's not. He argued (with his PhD behind him) that many other so-called "Witch Hazel" products were not genuine Witch Hazel and only products like Dickenson's are TRUE Witch Hazel Extract with 14 percent alcohol. Anything with less alcohol or no alochol he argued were not Witch Hazel, they are simply mis-using the name.

Surprisingly, it didn't get war-like with defenders of other brands jumping to their preferred brand's defense. Probably because this guy was the real deal and knew his chemistry. He said that the patented process to produce "genuine" Witch Hazel will yield somewhere around a 14 percent alcohol brew and anything else is fraud calling it "real" Witch Hazel. Any challenges to him were futule because he'd bury you in science and chemistry. It actually sounded to me like he worked for a company that produced Witch Hazel. Perhaps he did. Who knows.

Me? I heppen to only use Dickenson's Genuine and I mix in the following to make my own post-shave homebrew;
12 oz (more or less) of Dickenson's Witch Hazel, 2 oz Aloe Vera Liquid, 1 oz Tea Tree Oil and 1 oz of White Willow Bark Extract. The White Willow is like putting in crushed aspirin. It's a natural anti-inflamatory agent.

I don't care if science proves him right, I like Thayers and the Ph.D. Just needs to get a life, most things produced for today's society aren't the "real" thing.

Now Dicksons is good stuff and yes the price is right, did I need a Ph.D. With a need to show everyone their wrong that I like the stuff? No. But I'll still use my Thayers, and I,ll put that advise out there with all the learning I got! Tc

I like Thayers too. Dickinson's just works better for MY skin under MOST conditions. In a few circumstances, Thayers is a better application product, but overall, my skin prefers Dickinson's. But even with this, you see from my previous post I do not use it raw. I put in my own additives to make it work for my skin even better. But what works for me may not work for others. This is a fact.

That's the issue that true gentlemen understand. Each of us is a different organism and our skin reacts differently to chemicals. You can not have one sole product in any part of shaving that everyone agrees is the perfect product for them because skin and body chemistry are all different. The Chemist presenting his facts on the other forum was not poo pooing any particular brand or anyone's right to use any brand they wished. He was pointing out what chemically makes up real Witch Hazel. I found it interesting. The greatest barrier to learning is what you think you already know. I try and keep my mind open on forums like this because there are gentlemen here that have forgotten more about shaving than I will ever know.

Wow. Learned a lot on this post which is why I keep coming back to SRP. I wouldn't say that the PHD needs to get a life. Clearly, he is a knowledgeable person and was willing to take the time to teach us a few things. And Zipzop was kind enough to take the time to pass on that knowledge. I respect that as I am always looking to learn. Thanks to everyone who took the time to post.
