Alcohol-free Thayer's is my go-to. Plain, lavender, or rose (my favourite).

Thanked: 485I got some 'Herb Valley' Witch Hazel lotion from the health food shop. It smells disgusting and contains ethanol. Not sure if they all do. I think maybe I should have got something nicer...

Now the question is...WH with alcohol or alcohol-free?? What are your preferences, and why??

I use Thayers; alcohol-free with Aloe. I've never liked using alcohol-based products on my face; too much irritation. There is a significant botanical difference between Thayers and the garbage that's sold in discount stores. Thayers doesn't distill the extract Hamamelis Virginiana that their witch hazel is made from. So the astringent properties are not affected.

Witch hazel is an acquired smell. Most either love it or hate it. The Dickinson's is pretty good stuff for regular product before going with the super premium Thayers. The stuff in stores under their brands are just water down product, pretty worthless.
