Thanked: 267I think it is a good idea to rinse with cold water. There is another benefit to using Alum and that is that it kills shaving soap, and when you rinse, all the soap is off your skin. I have soft water and good shaving soaps tend to be hard to rinse off my skin.

Something I find interesting about alum is that my skin seems to have ajusted to it - when I first started using it, my skin would become beet red after applying it, but not so much now - I always apply it with lots of water, leave it on while I tidy up the sink and rinse it off with cold water before applying an aftershave. A benefit I've noticed about alum is that it also seems to prevent any kind of neck irritation/ingrown hair: must be because of its antiseptic properties

I always recomend to rinse after the alum, so who uses this daily or only for nicks or on occasion?

We strop our razors to remove and clean microscopic contaminants. In that way, I use the alum block after every shave.

Thanked: 0cheap alum block
I've been using it. It's great for the micro-cuts my old eyes can't see. I also rinse it off my face with cold water then follow with a moisturizer.
I'm using a cheap alum block I found at an Asian grocery store. It looks like a big block of rock candy. 79 cents. I bought 2. One for shaving; one for my wife's vintage cookie recipes.
Here's a picture of the packaging.
