Thread: Thayers witch hazel

Ok thanks for your thoughts. As you'll see from my SOTD post today I found a small bottle of Thayers medicated superhazel so I put some on before my AS. I felt the slight astringent sting like a very mild aftershave. I'll persevere for a week or two to see if there's any benefit for me.

I have Thayers with lemon, I started using it as a toner on a cotton pad post shave and just freshen up as I have oily skin, then I started using it as an AS splashing it on heavy as it is so nice and refreshing with a fresh cut light lemon smell which lasts a little. I will be replacing it and probably try another flavour too. Very versatile product, I have used it on a sting and I understand you can gargle with it?

When I was a child, it was used for mosquito bites and for facial astringent when people had acne. Also some people mix it with honey and aloe vera and drink it for colds. People gargle with it but I only know about the regular witch hazel, not the scented ones. I drank some when I was in fifth grade because some friends told me it had alcohol and my dad kept his brandy too high for me to capture. Anyway, I finally used it for after shave now that I'm shaving with a straight razor. Thayer's is great, I recommend the rose, and your post made me curious to try the lemon. Will probably be my next.

I use it from time to time ( i have the cucmber and the lavendar varieties) as a post shave. I've also used it with great success on my kids when they have had diaper rash or the like as well as the common use for insect bites. It soothes nicely.

My wife made fun of me for a while but when my youngest had something going on and had a red bum for a week we couldn't get rid of and he was in pain. I cleaned him up, splashed some on his bum and let him run around till it dried. After two days of doing this the irritation cleaned up well. Still had to sort out the GI issue but he was a happier baby.

I have used a variety of Thayers witch hazel offerings. The one on which I have settled the past few years is the Super Medicated with Aloe Vera. Mine is used after the alum and the cold water rinse. I pour a nickle size amount in my hand and apply it to my face, as I would an aftershave pour. The balm follows and finally the aftershave or cologne. Good stuff, this.

I use the unscented with Aloe toner.......Love it. Like Obie,I splash a small palmful before any AS goes on. Sometimes I wet a cotton ball and use it on various dry skin spots on on the face. Wikipedia has some nice info on witch hazel in general. Thank god for Thayers !

Can anyone note differences between the astringent and the toner? I have the unscented astringent right now and love it, but would like to try some of the scents of the toner as well.

Thayer's without alcohol is marked as toner. With alcohol is astringent.

They all tone the skin and are all astringent.

I have generic USP distilled witch hazel (Active ingredient: Hamamelis Virginianna Linne, Inactive:Ethyl Alcohol) and it does nothing for me other than dry my skin out and make it more red/irritated. Is Thayers a different formulation and would it work better?

Thayers is alcohol free and most, if not all contain aloe vera.
