Hot shave is a nice luxury when I have the time, it's a treat once in awhile.
On the whole, I'm a cold shaver. Rinse face with cold water, work lather into face, another layer of lather, and I get a great shave. That's all I do...
There's some great threads here about cold shaving, the way it was done in day's past...look into it....you may be surprised.

Oh yeah I have been doing cold and warm shaves for years. Even though I am n00b on SRP I have been wet shaving since 2010 with DE and used to use a Straight. Like you when I am sort on time cold is a nice option, but for helping with a solid prep I find the "Kyle's Prep" to be the way to go.

Make sure that you your shaving equip is clean and dry after every use. If you're using a DE, use a new one every shave. They're only a few cents each.
Use a good soap, TOBS, etc.; new blade ; Alum block, AS, Balm.
(Clean, exfoliate, tone, moisturise.)
