Thanked: 0AoS Pre Shave Oil
Well, AoS or not, the pre-shave oil gave me a much cleaner, smoother, nic free shave! I have been shaving with a safety razor for a few weeks now and have had some rough shaves. I have very sensitive skin and after a recent visit to the AoS, I picked up some pre-shave oil and am very pleased.
If you have been trying to decide whether or not to use a pre-shave oil... I would highly recommend you do!!

I used it when I first started, got better at shaving, and started blaming poor shaves on the oil (though the reality was a drop-off in beard prep).
I tend to do a much more fully-rounded ritual every day with shave-prep and hot towel over lather treatments. I have four bottles of pre-shave oil, two of them AoS, and they have found a nice home back in my shaving routine. I've heard somewhere that pre-shave oil tends to be very good for newbies, and does less and less as you get better at shaving. I'm only 9 months in, but I do think I have a pretty decent technique, and the AoS oil does seem to provide a gentler glide over my face as I hack away. It doesn't outperform my Musgo Real or TOBS pre-shave oil, but it does just as good a job, and I can pick it up locally rather than ordering online.

When I first started shaving it was like the difference between a good shave and tearing my face off. Now, it doesn't really matter if I use it. I really just use it for the smell. I buy the unscented which is not unscented. It has lavender, pepper and clove oil in it and it is a great smell to me. Some times I will use it as a A/S rub and it works that way because there is no burn and the oils help my skin which tends to dry out after a shave.

I also use the unscented AoS pre-shave occasionally. I rotate between poraso (which I use use more...i like the tingle and menthol scent) and AoS I have found that the oil provides great glide to the shave but as far as shave quality goes the 2 perform equally well for me. Now on the RARE occasion I don't use either one, I can definitely feel the difference. I am only about 6 months in, but I get fantastic shaves on a bi-daily basis and enjoy the pre-shave ritual almost as much as the wicked smooth shave

Thanked: 0That Poraso sounds nice! My first few shaves were a little rough with out the oil. Since using the pre-shave oil, shaves have been much better. I first looked at CVS for some pre-shave oil but was not successful. I was not sure if Pinaud had its own PSO or even Williams. I was looking on the SRB website and saw they have a good selection. PSO fan here!

Gentlemen,
The Art of Shaving pre-shave oil is a hit and miss with wet shavers: some like it and some don't. I don't like pre-shave oils, period, and prefer such pre-shave products as Castle Forbes or Edwin Jagger. For best results with pre-shave oils, leave your face slightly moist; then use a small amount of the oil, say, a nickel size, and message it in well. It is important that you wash your hands afterwards to prevent the razor, especially a straight, from slipping in your hands.

Used this stuff once and it was like glue....wasn't a fan then. May give it a shot again some day.

I think the smell it was makes me like it so much. I think with the improvement of technique and skill the oil has less effect on the shave. But god that combo of clove black pepper and lavender is awesome and I don't like lavender by itself. I am working on recreating the scent for a soap and A/S and once I do that I will probably never buy it again.

My experience is that while AoS oil makes the whiskers appear to stand up, the actual closeness of the shave suffers with the use of a pre-shave oil.
My father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.
