Increased lubrication AND face protection, beyond just the lather. I have shaved often with both lather and oil and sometimes just lather. With my more aggressive DE razors, I prefer using the oil. I find it diminishes any irritation and improves the 'glide' of the razor. The application is a simple step, just a dab rubbed on prior to lathering, and the cost is pennies, especially if one makes their own pso.
