I switched to cold water shaving a few months ago and stuck with it. It helped reduce my irritation and improved my shaves.

I typically use it cold straight from the tap, but during the winter months I turn the hot water faucet a bit to bring the water temp up from "freezing cold" to "cold". It's no fun shaving a frozen face.

But at least if you cut yourself you won't feel it.

The worst part of cold water prep is the anticipation. When it's over you'll feel refreshed! I was getting more irritation with the hot towel prep so I decided to give cold water a try and it worked wonders. The water I use runs at 4 degrees C from the well.

    No shivering.
    Well played!

For me cold water shaves give less irritation, but I can usually achieve a closer shave with warm water. It's a trade-off.

It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness

I think the best if u start with medium hot water, and before the second pass you swap on cold ! It works very well for me.....So I vote on BOTH

I had an aha moment this morning as I walked from the front room to the bathroom to shower and shave. Stopped in the kitchen long enough to reach into the freezer and pull out a small freeze pack like you would use in a cooler. After my cold water shave and rinse, since I've stopped using an alum block, I took the pack and rubbed my face with it. You could hear the pores snapping shut! If I wasn't awake before that I sure was now. Easier than using an ice cube.

I might give that a try.

Just curious, but why did you stop using an alum block?

It seems I have had an allergic reaction to the alum. I know it sounds strange and probably doctors will say I'm wrong. But I also have a mild case of Rosacea and have been eliminating anything that seems to cause it to flare up. Switching to a cold water shave was the first step and helped immensely. Irritation level did not subside much after switching and on a suggestion from another SRP member (not knowing I was using an alum block) to try it, my mind did an aha and said maybe that's a culprit. It's been one week and a lack of irritation has made me a believer in what might be un scientific method but it works anyway. Can't wait for a hot summer day and the ice pack rub to start the day right.
