Decided to pour boiling water into and all over this thing to see what it is made of.ITS A BEAST. Solid and heavy duty. Ok Its $72 so it better be worth its salt. I banged it around because It came new today. Holds heat and is heavy duty. If it was going to break it would have, dropped it from 4 foot onto carpeted floor. It bounced. delicate it isnt. Hot lather for 30 plus minutes yes. SWMBO states it holds to much heat for the delicate skin of a female. Told her good keep your hands off my new toy.
Your only as good as your last hone job.

That's the way it should be. It's not unusual that things nowadays lacks quality. Congratulations to your find

I've got the same exact one and really like it, sometimes though I prefer a lighter bowl to hold in the hand. As the weather gets colder I'm enjoying the warm lather more and more.

I have one of their smaller G12 scuttles, but with a different finish, and I love it! It's indeed a beast; the weight and size aren't the best for folks with small or weak hands. But the weight is enough to keep it stable on the counter while you whip up your lather.

One caution: many ceramics, especially hand-made ones, are subject to thermal shock, so pouring boiling water into your scuttle may risk damaging the glaze, or even causing breakage. A more cautious approach would be to first fill it with warm or hot water, then replace it with boiling water. Because it takes forever for the water to get hot in my bathroom, I fill my scuttle with warm water; and then replace it with the hot water once it finally arrives.

EDIT: Here's advice from another ceramic scuttle maker; I hadn't considered the point about drying out the lather:

    1. Prewarm your scuttle. Warming your scuttle by filling it with hot tap water, or submerging it in a sink of hot water, will heat up the ceramic and avoid robbing your lather of heat when you're ready to shave.
    2. Never use boiling water. Using boiling water in a hand-thrown ceramic vessel can cause cracking of the glaze or the pottery itself due to thermal shock. The greater the difference between the temperature of the pottery and the water poured into it, the greater the chances of thermal shock. Moreover, boiling water will cause your lather to dry out and collapse very quickly. Hot tap water is much more effective.

When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead. It's difficult only for the others.
It's the same when you are stupid.

Adding this to my Christmas list! I love the design of this. Just bulky enough to get the job done, but not overdone. Any idea how much water the inner portion holds? Just curious.

They come in 12 & 20 ounce capacities. You can check them out at the Georgetown Pottery site.

I have this same scuttle (although different color) and love it. I'm really glad I broke down and bought the G20. I like the extra volume for when I'm OBSESSED with getting absolute BBS. Sometimes I'll end up doing 3 passes plus a few touch up areas, so having a good amount of warm lather is nice.

Just put in my order for the G20 from Georgetown Pottery. Beautiful designes. I've been digging around my cups and mugs looking for a bowl that would hold heat through to the end of my shave. Even tried a small porcelain bake dish (worked well, but looked very odd in my bathroom). Really looking forward to adding this to my shave routine. Thanks for the great find!

You have a beautiful and well designed scuttle. Ditto on the advice from Dzanda: I have an XL scuttle from Robert Becker. Last winter I ran a few water temperature test with a digital thermometer. I always ran hot tap water in my scuttle first before adding the really hot water. I found the optimum water temperature was 175 degrees Fahrenheit. A hotter temperature dried out my soap or creams. I had plenty of heat at that temperature for a three pass shave. Warm shaving lather in the winter makes shaving a luxury. Enjoy your beautiful scuttle.
