New Method via Procrastination
I'm still on cartridges, Quattro Titanium, but I seem to have found a nice pre-shave that reduces irritation, and actually gets a slightly closer shave. Granted, this could all change once I get my Dovo SR I have my sights set on.
My trick: shaving.
On several occasions, I have done a quick WTG pass after a hot rinse of my face in the locker room at work before I start my shift to avoid wearing an annoying beardnet because of STUBBLE.
After my shift, I rinse again and shave ATG with Barbersol w/aloe.
Less irritation, blood, and I can go almost two days baby-butt-smooth, as opposed to right around a whole 24hrs.
It seems to give the stubble enough time to grow just that extra bit to aide in a closer ATG shave that would otherwise give me a mustache of blood to replace the stubble (I know, good sign of a dull blade).
I stumbled across this, but has anybody else tried similar approaches? Any "old pros" out there willing to split their routine up into two parts to verify this noobs working theory ?Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.

Yeah, likely, a dull blade.
Most welcome here!

Pre-shave is very important. Ditch the canned goo.

Wife already surprised me with some Van Der Haggen soap. But I'm gonna use the goo up before I lather the soap.
In my travels through SRP as a lurker the last week or two, and on the broader web,I saw no mention of such an unorthodox shaving strategy as my WTG morning & ATG evening.Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.

Thanked: 4826A good soap and a brush can improve your shave a lot. Dig into that new soap and just chuck the goo!

Thanked: 3795I think once you get, and learn how to use, a properly honed straight razor, you will not need to do this sort of split shift shaving.

Just to confirm what Utopian said, I had a great SR. shave yesterday at 2 pm because we were going to dinner with new friends. This morning, 18 hours+ later, it looks and feels like I just shaved with a cartridge or DE razor.

When I used cartridges, I would do ATG in the morning and WTG after a shower that night because I don't like hearing stubble scratching on the pillow at night. After a few months with an SR I was able to shave in the morning and 24 hours later was just getting a 5 o'clock shadow.
And go ahead and start using the VDH soap. You will be happier and get better shaves even with a cartridge. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski
