I apply it directly to my face and spread it trying to cover the shaving area. I use enough for it to be visible even after spreading it, but the amount visible is just a thin layer. I leave it there while making my lather (2-3 minutes) and then I apply the lather without washing the cream.
I could use less but I've found that when I apply the lather, the remaining cream helps make the lather slightly more creamier

    Hmm how is the consistency?
I ask because Noxzema has a very thin consistency and doesn't seem to clog the (safety) razors.
I remember that, in my experimentation phase, I tried with Nivea cream (the one in the blue tin can) and a St.Ives hand cream... the results were underwhelming but I am pretty sure it was because this creames are way too thick and greasy and after a few minutes my lather was caking.

I would say, if Cetaphil is water soluble, go for it! Just don't mix it with Arko soap... something in the mix makes the resulting scent to smell like hair tint. The shave is great (as expected) but the smell (mix between the camphor and the distinctive detergent smell from Arko) is unbearable.

This thread got me thinking again about a little Noxzema before I lather. I tried it several years ago but was not impressed with the result. I'll have to give it a try, I'll let you all know!

I really liked the Noxema product. Then Hiralau told me about Udderly Smooth. For my skin, it works better than the Noxema product. Take a little bit of the Utterly Smooth and some glycerin in your hads and rub on your face before you shave. Noxema is still an excellent product as well!

Underlying Smooth contains mineral oil much the same as Ponds cold cream.

    Good to know.
I don't think that cream is sold in my country but I have a cousin that goes to the US frequently. I'll ask him for a small bottle of that.. And why not, maybe one of Udderly smooth" too
