I used to use 'Ponds Skin Cream (Cold Cream) mixed with Vitamin E oil.
It moisturized and softened the beard and provided lubrication.

I'm not sure I understand what it's doing for your face other than clean it. I use a solid shampoo bar for my hair but it cleans and nothing else. It would have to leave some residue like lube on your face and I'm not sure I want that on my hair.

A quality shave cream or soap will supply everything you need for the perfect shave. If it doesn't, rather than use a crutch to shore up the cream find a better soap or cream.

    Good point.

What kind of shave soap or cream are you using after your preshave shampoo bar?

I used Noxema for several years. It made my skin so soft I had to quit. The blades were nicking me a lot.
