Thanked: 5I think as far as trying out different oils, it still boils down to quality. If you're using a quality olive oil, it will probably feel better than something you bought at walmart. Personally, i'm not very picky. My girlfriend had a bottle of sesame oil that she bought and uses somehow for her hair to keep it from frizzing when she dries it. It seems to work pretty well as a pre-shave but most times, i don't even bother and still get a decent shave.

Thanked: 11I recently tried The Art of Shaving's Preshave oil... smells just like the Secret Shave they sell at Walmart... and works just as well. The TAOS big bottle is a much better buy though. It's thick, you don't use much, it has a pleasant aroma, and it lubricates the shave while not leaving a gulf coast oil spill in the sink.

I've been using vitamin e oil that I found at a local grocery store for $1 for a 6 oz bottle. It's a mix of soy oil and coconut oil and seems to make both the whiskers softer and the lather thicker.

Y'all are going to laugh me out of the forum for this, but I stumbled onto a secret that seems to make shaving a lot easier and closer.
Just for the heck of it, on day while shampooing, I decided to put some conditioner on my beard and let it set, to see if it made it any softer (I have a horribly tough beard, like barbed wire). It seemed to work, so I used some more in place of shaving soap, and I got the closest, and easiest shave of my life with my Dovo.
I have tried it several times since then, and it has worked every time.

Thanked: 3I am new to all this, but I also found a similar 'recipe'. I went to a local place, and bought some 'essential oil' - Lavender, which is also expensive but the recipe only requires a few drops, so will go far. I bought some 2oz 'vials' online for change. It worked pretty well, but the scent is very strong. I think I had maybe 2 too many Essential Oil drops.... here is an E how link I got it from.

I have been using olive oil (not the cooking kind) as a pre shave oil, with good results. I just use a few drops and make sure it is worked in well. I've read that too much will have an adverse affect on your lather, as in not letting it cling to the skin if to much oil is used. Also using baby oil is okay as long as you wash it off afterward. All baby oil is, is scented mineral oil and mineral oil, if left on will clog the pores. Was told this by a soap maker when I mentioned that I was using it as a pre shave. Not any more. Also, glycerin is a good lubricant, too. I found a bottle at CVS pharmacy for around 3 bucks.

Thanked: 0Right on brother--for a while I tried to force the razor to do the job. Good shave prep, a patiently stropped razor and a light razor stroke gets it done with satisfaction.

Nope don't think your crazy gigmaster that's an old trick that I remember being told when I first started shaving in general.
