Thanked: 335Mercy, there are a lot of facial emollient concoctions out there. My favorite is plain old Crisco. It'll hold your hair in place; it'll slick up your skin; it'll make a fair pie crust. And if you put it on thick enough, bees can't sting through it. What more could a guy ask?

A bit of mineral oil (pharmacy grade) is a better choice.
You do want some handy to keep a razor from rusting
anyhow.
But suntan oil, olive oil, cold cream and other high quality oils
and other makeup products have merit. Like any product
allergy risks needs to be given some attention. For example
peanut oil would be totally wrong for some people that are
allergic to it.

Thanked: 0Thanks Lori, for pointing out the difference between commercial "food" grade oils and therapeutic "cosmetic" grade essential oils. I get an excellent pre shave oil from an organic web site "www.ScentuallyYours.com" where the pre shave oil is shea butter, sunflower and grapeseed oils together. A little dab softens up the whiskers and has never gunked up my shaving process. I can even have it scented to match my cologne. LOL

Um this might sound like a silly idea, but wouldn't you just leave the Cooking oil for, well.... Cooking?
Pre-Shave oil is not a new thing and not a good thing, it creates a barrier between your shaving soap/cream and the hair as your soap is water based and the oil is not and we all know oil and water don't mix.
Look for a pre-shave like mentioned before Castle Forbes - Trumpers Skin Food etc.
When it comes to oils in the shaving soap they usually kill the lather (especially olive oil) and you will find that they are usually made by women who make soap then think I will make a shaving soap for my husband and have no idea what they are doing because the properties of shaving soap are different than normal soap.
