Default Lloyds Pre shave oil causing lather problem???

I think my pre-shave oil is killing my lather
Tried Lloyds pre-shave oil a few days ago for my pre shave treatmnent
about 5 mins later I start making the lather
Used Lloyds Shave Cream - Lavendar scent
The lather looked good as I mixed it up

When I applied to my face the lather seemed to thin right out
Retried 3 more times to build the lather up and it got no better
Tried to shave with it (stubborn I know)
Razor pulled a fair bit when shaving

Stopped and added some shave soap
Cant remember the name right now .... grrr
Worked a treat, made a great lather
And a good enough shave (for my newb status)

Can the members advise whether this is normal
for pre-shave oil to do this?
What would be a better alternative?
My skin is fairly sensitive atm

    Thoughts & feedback most welcome

    Rick

Preshave oil can kill lather, especially if there is too much oil. I use a preshave oil myself sometimes, what I do is wipe off a little with a napkin before I apply the lather. The oil still works wonders even if it is thin.

    Hi Rick

It could be your pre shave oil is killing the lather or that the shave cream doesn't work very well or you need more work with that cream. A easy way to see is try using the shave cream by itself and see how it lathers and last. I have tried a sample of Lloyds shave cream before and thought it was a good product but I think there are better such as the C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream with Eucalyptus Oil.

+1 on the previous posts. If you use oil, apply as little as possible.

My personal preference is to use either Proraso, Prep or Vitos pre-post-shave cream instead of oil.

+1 also, I use the proraso prep cream also. It seems way less oily than the AOS pre-shave oil I use occasionally. Although I have never had a problem with oil killing the lather. In the past I used olive oil or the AOS oil. These have kinda gone by the wayside after I got the Proraso. The Proraso just seems to really open my pores and give me a WAAAY closer shave. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the feedback gents
It seems my use of pre-shave oil is the problem here
I seem to have a lot of oil on my face when I apply
The amount I use would be about 1/2 tea spoon

Castel33 I think I will take your tip and wipe excess off
    Then lather and shave
Found out the shave soap name too
Caswell & Massey ® - Greenbriar Shave Soap
I have had some really good looking lather with the soap
but it does seem to break down a bit quick
adding some LLoyds cream seems to help some more
Certainly a thicker lather and longer lasting

thanks for your input here guys
I will try to find some Proraso Prep Cream
Seems a bit harder to find in Australia
Should be worth the effort though.

    Thats about it for now
    Thamks again

    Rick,
Have you tried other soaps or creams with the pre-shave oil? I know with two of the soaps I use, the pre-shave oil I use doesn't work too well with it. However, the pre-shave oil works great with one of my creams. Just some chemistry that doesn't get along too well.

    Hi pmburk

I am thinking of trying another soap or cream
Currently looking to buy some Italian Barber goodies
Just have to wait for them to re-open after their buying trip
Should be late August I think - details on their website

Right now I'm trying to find a local supplier of Glycerin Cream or oil
Struck out so far with several chemists
Trying for local soap makers now
At least this will give me more shaving options
    That's gotta be good :-)
    All part of the experience

    Cheers for now

Have you tried any pharmacies for the glycerin?

    Hi Rick

Caswell and Massey are a well known brand that many people have liked some products from and disliked others. From what I can remember most have not like there soaps or cream.

As to looking for local soaps and creams you may want to check out the down under forum at the very bottom of the forum page (or this link Down under ) and look around there or ask other guys from around you where they get local items. May help you find something quicker.
