    question while this thread is still new for anyone who might know:

    what effect does hard water have on the lather? that is, how can i tell if i should buy some distilled water for it?

    The only way to tell is to buy a gallon of distilled water and try it.

    damnit too many things in my shaving arsenal already that i have purchased and probably don't have any more use for. oh well i'll just use the distilled water in my iron if it doesn't help with my shaves.

    If you are having difficulty with getting a good lather and you know that water quality is bad where you live give bottled water a go! Living in Adelaide and in particular a few years ago we had very hard water. When travelling intestate and just using the same shampoo you really noticed the difference. A lot less was required and more lather obtained.

    You could buy a small bottle to top up your car battery, and then just happen to test a bit with your soap :P That way it can stay in the garage and not in your shave arsenal
