Opinions on Musgo Real?
Hello, pcg,
Through the years I think I have covered the gamut of pre-shave brands and found nothing as good as Castle Forbes. It's a touch pricy, but I think worth it.
I use good old fashioned Noxzema in the blue tub. Inexpensive, lasts a long time and it works.
My best luck has been with Proraso pre-shave cream, but I have also used Noxzema.
Thanks to all.
Obie, I'll pick up some Castle Forbes. And will cross test it against its far more lowly brother, Noxema. :-)
I've tried two brands, an inexpensive Peraso and a more expensive Castle Forbes. The latter is wonderful in every way. The former works but I'm not crazy about the smell or feel on the skin. I've just order a pre shave herbal gel from Taylor of Old Bond Street...will report back.
I have tried the AOS Lavender Pre-Shave Oil as well as Noxema in the blue tub,
AOS- Works well and smells very nice, It's a bit slippery and oily and can be hard to wash off your hand after applying but it does work very well and is not too expensive (IMHO) The thing with it is that you really want to use as LITTLE as possible and it's easy to overapply.. I also use it to coat my blade when I am done since I only SR shave once a week (DE the rest of the week due to time constraints, I want the SR to be a treat,...and I'm still learning SR :) )
Noxema - Easy to apply, Cheap, and surprisingly works great to lubricate the face, it would be a perfect pre-shave oil for me except that I really hate the scent, I really have to rinse my face a lot (and then re hot towel it) to get the smell off before I apply my ASB
Thinking of trying the Castle Forbes :)
WOW just priced out the Castle and Forbes Oil.... Holy spendy Batman!!
No, it's not cheap. I do find that I use a lot less of my Castle pre shave vs Peraso, but still, it's not that big of a difference. If you're dealing with the WAF (wife acceptance factor), the Castle products do come in lovely bottles that look nice sitting out. I'm reaching for excuses here obviously because it is quite expensive but feels oh so nice. I save my Castle products for special occasions while using the cheaper stuff for everyday shaves. My lady is buying me the Castle Forbes AFTER shave balm (Lavender) as gift...nice!
Regardless, the pre-shave Castle Forbes seems to be out of stock in the regular size. I've found it in "travel size," but can't seem to find it in stock anywhere. Hm--? Anyone locate it in the regular size?
Excellent. Thanks!
I got a sample of the Truefitt & Hill pre shave oil and it is the shiznit. It only takes a few drops and is light and has a great scent.
Downside: pricier than I can afford for a while so I'm using it sparingly.
^^^ Once I find a good thing, I tend to stick with it, and this has been My One and Only for two years now. It agrees with my skin and makes the shave noticeably smoother. At $32 per little bottle, it is expensive, but the bottle seems to last forever, so I would say it's a very good per shave price ratio...
That seems to be the case with many wet shaving items, it seems like a huge investment upfront, but the product lasts a long time.
I paid 22 bucks for a tub of shaving cream that I like (AOS LAvender) and from what I can see, I expect to get about 6 months out of it, figure 4 bucks a month for the cream. Compared to the can of goo I used to use that was 6 bucks a can and lasted about a month and a half, so it's really not a bad deal :)
The only pre-shave oil I have tried is Shave Secret, but I quite like it! I love the clove and menthol smell, it's low price, and makes my shave just that much smoother. Great buy.
homemade babyoil n xtra virgin olive oil with 4 drops of jasmin oil shake n apply.give it a try
I use Utterly Smooth, after a suggestion from another member. I've been using it every shave for 9 months; on my second bowl. it's greaseless, clean wash off, softens whiskers fast, no strong smell.

I have used Truefitt & Hill it was ok but a little more than what I want to pay for 2 oz of oil,I've also used Alt-Innsubruck again ok it was a free sample again ok wasen't fond of the smell, from WallyWorld shave secret used it once and never again,shave-oil for men not sure where it came from Didn't care for it, I've used both of the Proraso's like them as well as 3P all seem some what like Noxzema which is ok' but the one I really like is Sandolor Floid it great may be just the smell I'm not sure and from what I understand It along with the Blue Floid it to be discontinued not 100% sure about this. I want to try the Spanish Floid pre-Shave I've just not got around to it yet. But my Go-To pre shave oil is the Sandolor Floid.
