Yes, Padraig, my handle comes from my Speedster coffee machine.
Glad to hear you have a Cremina; that's a great machine from what I've heard. Levers are cool! Cheers!

Thanked: 270When I first started shaving with a straight I was overwhelmed by all the face and blade suggestions various people were recommending. Plus I had to think so much about what I was doing while shaving that I was distracting myself and making mistakes anyway. Through trial and error I found out I didn't have to do anything to get my face ready if I would just take a shower before, rather than after, the shave since I always do one right after another.
For me, it was just simplifying the process and I just stuck with it. I don't doubt that what you're doing works real well.

Thanked: 0While I don't yet use a straight razor I am well accustomed to the lovely sensation of a warm towel prep prior to shaving. It may be a negligible difference after showering but if we are talking about an "art" and the "zen" the hot towel is my window to the spiritual experience.

Thanked: 1I get how a hot towel would feel good, but I confused by the whole process. Do you just hold a towel to you face or do you wrap it around your head? when ever I see pictures it's just at a barber and they are reclined with a towel over their face. And then what are you doing while you have a hot towel on your face?

When I use one, I just hold it against my face with my hands, pressing gently into my neck and cheeks. I'm usually watching the wife make funny faces at me.

Thanked: 1that's more or less why I shower. partly cause I need a shower in the morning and then it gives me something to do. then some times after I've gotten everything ready I will put a hot towel on my face for a few seconds. then I will put a towel on my face between passes. but I am still learning so I am kind of slow and don't always have time in the morning to do that. so when I shave at night I don't really know what to do cause I just don't want to stand there with the towel for a minute. and I just don't feel like going back and forth from the tv in the living room to the bathroom. maybe I should just bring the chair and tv into the bathroom.

I shower every day anyway. I stink if I don't. Then I shave in front of a steamed up mirror.

When I started I used to use all the prep suggested by the good and hearty fellow's well met at the Glorious site, but now I"m down to the following:
Very long hot wach up for my face.
Put on lot's of after shave to completely de-grease the wiskers.
Lots of cold water to shrink the skin and stiffen the beard
put on lather with a very firm brushing on.
leave on while I prep the Str8 razor then 'Shave!'
By the way I do make my lather with bunch's of hot water, don't think cold water makes any decent later, so a cold shave by definition it not what I do.
After I shave I will rinse with cold water touch up some high spots, more cold water and then after shave, after I clean up my Lu space, I put on lot's of Noxzema and let that soak in,
I'm done!!
