The main point of using a scuttle is to achieve a warm lather. I am creature of comfort and a warm lather is a luxury I appreciate. Modern scuttles (I got mine from SRD) achieve this very well. I've also used a regular shaving mug on an electric coffee warmer disk. Similar results, it just takes a little longer.

I work my lather in a mug (from Fendrihan) and simply leave it in the sink with hot water. This seems to work well, mind you I've never tried a scuttle...

I bowl lather in a scuttle from dirty bird It just makes a nice warm lather .. While in shower I fill scuttle with hot tap water place brush inside the top bowl shower then dump water refill with the hottest tap water and mix my lather in top bowl.
