Go crazy, live a little, give it a go . My preshave varies a bit but as I am still learning to straight shave that's all part of the process. You could always have a go when you have time to start again if you aren't enjoying it.
I have been Recommended the prosario preshave, but don't have any yet, am using some oil before lathering (mostly)
Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

One thing that worked well for me is massaging the first lather into the face. So no preshave but massaging seems to get the stubble to stand up. YMMV and we are all different, enjoy!

A pre-shave treatment is needed if you find it a benefit to your shave. Stop using Proraso pre-shave and see how you like it. It's up to you to determine what you need to get a close, comfortable shave. As others have said, experiment and enjoy the ride.

For the past six months, I've been wetting my face, lathering up quickly and shaving with fine results.

    Aren't you?

I have been pushing my times lower and lower and hope to finish well enough to qualify for nationals in the upcoming straight shave time trials.

There is no wrong way to wet shave as long as you are enjoying the results...and hopefully the process too.

Ha! Made me chuckle. but you're right, the longer I spend making a nice lather, the better my shave. It offers the Zen of prep plus I guess the smaller bubbles improve the shave. So...you just had a whole bottle of Mojo sitting around the house huh?

    My Routine:

    1) Pour whiskey tumbler with Jameson

    My shave routine:
    1) pour tumbler half full of Jamesons
    2) strop razor on leather and newspaper
    3) splash cool water on face
    4) face lather
    5) shave 3 passes, enjoying Jamesons before and after every pass is mandatory.

I used to have elaborate pre-shave rituals, but I found, with my beard and skin, that they were not necessary. The only thing required is a very sharp razor. I also found that the cool water was more soothing to my skin than hot water. Maybe is I leave off the Jamesons I'll be able to shave as fast as Ace!
