Extra Protection During Winter Months?
The temperature dropped below freezing last night and I turned the furnace on a week ago. I have already noticed my skin drying out. Since I still go hiking and camping in the winter, in addition to the effects of forced air heating, I was wondering if anybody uses something extra post shave during the winter. I think I saw in the SOTD thread a reference to Mitchell's lanolin being applied post shave.

Winter time I use Nivea post shave balm and I will add a drop of glycerin to it.
The glycerin really helps your face hold the moisture. It is just Whisker Whacking

Any balm or lotion that you like should do the trick for you.

For extra moisturising balm, for me it has to be either of these two:
- L'Oreal MenExpert Hydra Sensitive 24 hr Hydrating balm
&
- Weleda After Shave Balm
Both excellent balms to use that last long throughout the day.

Thanked: 1195Really? In Missouri? Here in my section of the Canadian Prairies it hasn't dipped below freezing yet and I don't have my furnace on now after 9:00 pm
All joking aside, any balm should work wonders, from the cheapest (Nivea) to the most expensive (Xpec, T&H, Castle Forbes). My sensitive Canadian skin will attest to that much

It really is freezing. The high today was 46F, currently 26F.
I have been looking at Nivea and T&H Ultimate Comfort Balm. I would like to try T&H but I think Nivea is more in my price range.Last edited by Leatherstockiings; 10-25-2013 at 03:33 AM. Reason: Spelling

That was a freak cold snap, I still hope that I drained one of our well pumps soon enough(I'll find out in spring I guess...) Anyhow, you can use straight lanolin, but if you have even the slightest tendency top break out, you'll probably regret it. Any quality balm that includes glycerin, Vitamin E, coco butter, or ( a little) lanolin should do the trick.

I have four recommendations. I have used Nivea's after shave balm for years so, in what appears to be a life long quest for the best mens moisturizer, I tried Nivea Mens "Maximum Hydration Nourishing Lotion" Says " Sea Minerals "at the bottom. First ingredients are water and glycerin so it must be the rest of the stuff that makes it work. I was told by my dermatologist to use a cream but this stuff has decent staying power... except on my hands... which I wash alot.
By the way , the Doctor recommends Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream which works well. In addition I use Palmers cocoa body butter, ultra moisturizing cream on my face and neck. The last one sounds odd by it's title, and it is from Trader Joe's. They call it Pumpkin Body Butter. It actually has Coconut, Shea Butter, and Pumpkin seed oil in it. It also works very well. As to how they smell? Well the Nivea smells like the balm. Light and fads quickly. The Cetaphil is almost neutral, the Palmers starts with some coconut and hints of chocolate but nothing distinctive and it fads away. The Trader Joes has a...well it really has a citrus..no no fresh raw pumpkin...drat! It is cool and fresh and like Fall without being pumpkin pie or burning leaves. It too fads but it takes a bit.

I like BullDog moisturizer. It's lightly scented with bergamot, but it fades fast. It also dries quickly and doesn't leave my face feeling tacky.
Question for you all: balm before splash, or splash before balm?I have found that if you love life, life will love you back. Arthur Rubinstein
