Thanked: 1Si,
In all honesty I don't know what qualities any aftershave has except some alcohol to "disinfect" and close pores. Plain ol' witch hazel works great for that, has no smell (or minimal depending on the brand) and you can then find a younger-oriented EDT or cologne you (and your girlfriend) enjoy.

Neutrogena Razor Defense lotion contains soy, aloe and I'm fairly sure that it also has a bit of witch hazel. The scent is more modern and subtle enough to be combined with more modern scents like Zino, Paco P.H., D&G and Cool Water.

I've gone the other way: have always used modern scents but realise that they're all so, well, similarly modern! ....[QUOTE]
I agree completely Mark. I'm so sick of seeing "all the usual suspects" - as I call them, in every store I walk into.
I've been pursuing a recent strategy in my aftershave/scent routine. I've zeroed in on a few scent types that I like and will stick with. Sandalwoody, Citrus, Vetiver, and Spice type. I'm getting one a/s that will go with each scent type. For example in the summer I'm going with a citrus/limsey scent and am looking for a fleeting citrus a/s that I can use with any of my citrusy EDTs.
In the end- obviously, you have to try a bunch of scents and see what you like.

I wear Davidoff "Cool Water" -- mostly because of an effect it had on a past girlfriend. You guys can keep the grandpa-smelling stuff!

Cavendish Black has an amazing effect on women and I'm talking 19-26 year range. Just don't tell that to Olga

I suggest you check out http://www.bear-haven.com/page3.html She makes both a summer and winter aftershave balm that are very good for your skin. You have the option to buy it unsented, and then use your EDT of choice. You can also pick a scent from the shaving soap page, and have a custome aftershave balm made.

I really like the scent of clubman, but when it comes to modern I have not seen anything beat Jaipur. I work with a 40 year old, 5 foot 4, 250 pound guy that wears it, and when he does every woman from 19 to 45 stops him wherever he is walking just to put their nose up to his neck. Sometimes they dont even ask a name, just a " come here, can I smell you." I bought it once, got the same effect and the wife said, " stick to the pinaud. I like it enough and no one else really needs to but me."

Driven by Derek Jeter is pretty good, too. A little sweet and it fades after about 4-5 hours, but hey, it's a fun trip while it lasts.

Thanked: 9I think Nenad had a great list, with 2 of my all-time abs favorites in it - Gucci Pour Homme and Bulgari Black. I don't think these are modern, though
Modern - how do we define this? Imo, Cool Water is definitely not modern!
To me modern is, say, Armani Mania. I define "modern" as what is released in the very near past and is a bit different from previous scents. For example, at one point the green Curve for men was modern and interested many girls. I don't think it's modern now though. Much longer ago CK Eternity / One was for men the most modern one could get. Modern isn't necessarily good or bad in my book
Cheers

Hai Karate, 'nuff said. Seriously though, check out the Trumpers, Truefitt & Hill, and Penhaligons offerings. Old school or not, they have some righteous odors among them. Taylor's of Old Bond Street has some good ones too. Some are "grandpa", but others are just money. Sophisticated I guess is a good word. Do you want to smell like a disco jockey or a gentleman? At least give them a sniff...
