Thread: Signature Scent

Gentlemen,

Post shave fragrance, in a small way, helps define a gentleman's personality. Many of us rotate a collection of fragrances, say from Pinaud Clubman to Ogallala bay rum. Fragrance is personal. For instance, I dislike most bay rum. The last time I splashed bay rum on my Hollywood face, my wife and two daughters made me get rid of it. Yet bay rum is the favorite of many shavers. And so it goes.

And then there is the signature scent. I have two actually: Woods of Windsor, and Spanish Leather by Truefitt & Hill. Unfortunately, Woods of Windsor, a company that dates back to 1770 (the year Beethoven was born), no longer produces the Woods of Windsor cologne and aftershave. I am on my last bottle, and I savor it by using it once in a while. Spanish Leather is still produced by Truefitt & Hill, and I am grateful for that.

These two scents, Woods of Windsor, by Woods of Windsor, and Spanish Leather, by Truefitt & Hill, in a small way, help define my personality. That's why I consider them my signature scents.

What are your signature scents?

Well between my wife and I we have been trying to narrow that down over time. I love Bay Rum and Tabac, but those are the two that I currently only use when I am at work. Her preferences are woodsy scents, and that is where we agree. I used a bottle of Royalle Vetiver that was point of agreement. I have since also used a Cedarwood and Clarysage by St. James of London that we both agree on. I have not yet chosen my signature but we are working in that direction. I really like Frankincense and Myrrh as scents but have not really found one that would be subtle enough for the better half. I am open for suggestion as to where this may go, I used to really like a particular brand of English Leather but I have not seen that brand for decades.

This is an area in which I still consider myself a neophyte .. Especially considering the withering multitude of scents out there!

I started off as an "old time barbershop" scent kinda' guy. Pinaud, Lucky Tiger, Old Spice ... Splash and go scents. I guess I've matured a bit, and thanks to some samples, gifts and scents that I have purchased, I have arrived at a few favorites, with Knize Ten at the top of my list .. I just love it! Not far behind is Penhaligons Opus 1870, and English Fern, in that order. A sample I received that I really enjoy is Tobacco Oud, by Tom Ford.

I'm sure there are many more that I would like that I just have not had the pleasure to use yet!

I would say L'Occitane Vetyver and Molton Brown Tobacco Absolute. But if I'm going to fight dragons, or reasonable facsimiles thereof, it's Pinaud Clubman.

I have not had enough time with various AS. So far my absolute favorite are LaVanille by Barrister & Mann, "Small Batch Shave Tonic" by Derby City Chop Shop, and Pharaoh's Dreamsicle by Sterling.

For EDTs, I think Dior Homme Parfum for the winter and Creed Aventus for the summer are my favorite.

As much as I love to mix it up, my signature scents have become two by a really cool Santa Monica company called Smell Bent. I go with Florist's Fridge during the day and The Yard Next Door at night.

Mon Triomphe and Stetson. Unfortunately I can't find Mon Triomphe anymore except on flea bay.

I am currently using Chanel Bleu. No compliments but I like it a lot. I have tried all the Chanel scents since Chanel for Men in the 90s. I got a lot of compliments when using Allure which has a citrus base note. I wasn't that crazy about Antaeus or Egoiste but have not worn them yet.

I am going back to, and what I would call my signature scent.
Platinum: Crispy, fresh woods with sweet spices. Very sexy scent with lively quality. It lasts long time and no problems with sillage.



The ladies love it and I do too. Best in summer. This is how I came to try Bleu, for winter.

I have had a significant reluctance to after shaves. I usually go with a balm post shave, and since I shave at night, the scent is usually gone by morning. I have a fairly strong sense of smell and most make me cough or sneeze. As such, i guess my signature is the lack of scent.

Im afraid to say im a Brut man.
Ive worn many aftershaves but the wife has always liked Brut the most.
I was the first person to hold both my kids and I was wearing Brut, so my little 3yo girl loves the smell most too. My boy is only 9 months but im sure he'll be a Brut man!
