Thread: Staying power

Yeah, yeah, I know...'Everything can be found on the internet..." However, that is, among others, is what this forum is for....Discussion. Even though I could do the research and, probably, find the answer, I would just as soon promote the use of the forum and ask here. And NO, I'm not just lazy. I really do want to promote the use of this forum.


That being said:

I wonder what the ingredient(s) is, that makes certain colognes and aftershaves "Stick with you" throughout the day vs die'ing after a couple hours? I recently bought a bunch of samples of colognes and aftershaves, to see which fragrance I (and Mama) liked. I noticed that some lasted longer than others, given the same (approx) amount applied.

For example:
The D.R. Harris 'colognes' seem to die off after a few hours.

The Pinaud "aftershaves'" seem to hang on longer...usually about 1/2 to 3/4 of the day.

Proraso "aftershaves" seem to die within minutes.

My "old" aftershaves and colognes...ones I have used for a hundred yrs (Stetson 'aftershave' and Tommy H. 'cologne') seem to last all day...and then some. These seem to be "revived" throughout the day as I perspire...whereas the others just 'go away.'



Since my wife has a small business in which she makes soaps, body scrubs (whatever those are), etc. I asked her...in which she said she'd 'check into it." But, to promote forum use, as well as, ask more "veterans", I post here.

Comments, suggestions, theories, tales of witchcraft, etc!?!?

Cheaper ingredients along with using just a filler, like alcohol, makes them disappear a little quicker than say a top quality scents using better oils,, of course a lot depends on what your applying, Colgne, or aftershave , colognes have more oils in them to stay, a lot if aftershaves heavy n alcohol, will dissipate quicker. I'm with TC on this one. It is my understanding that by design, aftershave is suppose to be a scented astringent and it's main purpose is to tighten an disinfect you skin, after shaving. Cologne and Eau du Toilete are both intended to make you smell nice all day long, with the EDT being the higher quality and as such should have the best of the best and the greatest staying power and requires only a very small amount. As I understand it after shave is a splash on, high volume use and has a lot of things like witch hazel and alcohol in them, where as their other two have far less by volume. If you wanted really powerful and long staying scent you could go with an essential oil blend as well. They tend t o really perk up if you get warm or hot, so some caution is recommended. I am no expert and that is as technical of an answer as I can come up with. It does get very confusing as some essential oils are top note and others base note. A base note has more staying power than a top note. So a scent starts with a top note and finishes with a base note. Sort of the first thing you identify and the last thing you identify as well as how long they hang in there. My wife used to be very involved with aroma therapy and this is alll I have retained.

And that's what I thought, too. HOWEVER, that is exactly the opposite of what I have found thru my trials and errors. Such as, Pinaud classic and Stetson "Aftershave" lasts throughout the day...whereas D. R. Harris "Colognes" seems to die rather quickly!

I have noted, however, the Pinaud Classic doesn't have the 'sting' that most other 'aftershaves' have...telling me, it doesn't have much alcohol content (which would explain the 'lasts longer' theory).

Although, my Tommy H. 'cologne' burns like the dickens, if I get too close...and it has the longest 'staying power' of them all!

I guess I'll just chalk it up to another "Mystery of Life", like 'why do you drive on the parkway and park on the driveway!'

Ya but John most of us don't have an auxiliary 15 gallon tank in the car with an overhead, sprinkler system full of Pinaud to keep you smelling like a barbershop all day. Tc

I agree! Pinaud, and also Old Spice and Floid seem to last forever.
