Thumbs up Vetiver: No Country For Old Men

    What a terrific thread!

Vetiver (aka Vetyver) has been one of my favorite afterscents -- probably THE favorite, given the number of different ones I own and use.

But first, vetiver shaving soaps/creams. I own one of each -- QED's version (cryptically labeled with a generic "Luxury Lather" sticker), and Cyril R. Salter's "French Vetiver". Of the two, I by far prefer the QED shaving soap; sadly, QED no longer offers the single-note version, having replaced it with a Vetiver & Lime incarnation; no, I haven't tried it... and don't plan on doing so -- my tub of QED Vetiver (purchased eleven years ago) is more than half-full, and destined to outlive me. I can't say the same for the Salter's French Vetiver (also purchased from QED) -- yes, it lathers like a beast, but I've just never grown to like the aroma; let me stress that it is, certainly, a matter of personal taste.

Now, the afterscents. I don't know where I read about it (or heard it mentioned), but I categorize them according to "season" -- and I go with the order in "The Howdy Doody Show" character, Princess Summer-Fall Winter-Spring.

Summer: Guerlain Vetiver (also works for me during Spring, but more towards the latter part)
Fall: L'Occitane Eau de Vetyver, Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vetiver Haiti
Winter: Maître Parfumeur et Gantier Route du Vétiver
    Spring: Compagnia Delle Indie Vetyver

I own several others, which don't really fall into a distinct seasonal category -- Floris Vetiver, Carolina Herrera Sensual Vetiver, and Carlo Corinto Vetyver (the last two might best be described as "evening" scents) -- but my "hands-down" favorite is Jo Malone Black Vetyver Café.

UPDATE: I must apologize to readers of this thread -- many of my recommendations are no longer in production...

    • Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vetiver Haiti -- discontinued
    • Carolina Herrera Sensual Vetiver -- discontinued
    • Carlo Corinto Vetyver -- discontinued
    • Jo Malone Black Vetyver Café discontinued

I'm sure you can find some, or all, of them over the Internet; but a 3.4oz bottle of Black Vetyver Café fetches (to me) astronomical prices on "The Bay". Newer scents abound -- I've read good things about Tom Ford Grey Vetiver (both the EDP and EDT versions) on Basenotes.com -- and if there's one, there's more. As for me? Well, I'm sticking with what I've got (and I'd bought the 10.6oz bottle of Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vetiver Haiti, so there might be an opportunity here for modest decants... we'll see; PM me if you're interested).

You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.
