Thanked: 3795The Ogallala bay rums consists of oils and I believe witch hazel. They separate, with the oils sitting on top. When you shake it, you get the same effect as a bottle of oil and vinegar. Little spheres of oil disburse into the witch hazel but as soon as you stop shaking the two start to settle and the spheres start to aggregate and float to the top to stratify again. I don't know if the bottle you have allows you to see it, but this happens pretty quickly with the Ogallala products.
If you don't shake it, the oils are on the top exposed to air so when you open it the scent will be much more powerful. If you apply it without shaking it you will get a much higher concentration of oils that will smell much stronger and might irritate your skin.
If you shake it and immediately open and apply it, then the odds are good that you will be very happy with it!Last edited by Utopian; 07-31-2017 at 01:36 PM.

Did the shave and took the Bay Rum public today.
After carefully following the instructions on the bottle and SHAKING WELL , I found the Ogallala to be quite tolerable, and very much to my liking.
Once again, Thank You, Sir(s) for setting me on a path toward the light.

Thanked: 26Glad to hear so much good press for this fine product, which emanates from my home state!
It is really nice. I recall getting a spontaneous compliment from someone at work when wearing the Limes and Peppercorns bay rum aftershave. First and only time that happened. The scent lasts a good long time even in the aftershave form. I haven't tried the cologne version.Steve

I have several Ogallala Bay Rum products, and I would like them to be a bit stronger in smell. Funny how opinions differ. Ogallala Bay Rum company was started not that long ago by a guy in Ogallala NE and made in the basement IIRC. Grew to such popularity it was moved to an actual building. I used to talk to the owner/creator but they have grown so much that they no longer sell directly to the public. Says something about their products.
I met my wife in Ogallala, NE in 1993 and growing up went to many movies at either the drive in or the downtown theater in Ogallala. Old cow town that was the end of a long cattle drive from Texas to the shipping docks of the Union Pacific Rail Road. Cowboys would get a bath, a straight razor shave and copious amounts of Bay Rum after shave and head off to the saloons to spend money on whiskey, gambling and women.
Witch hazel is one of it's main ingredients, and if too strong a scent, just cut it a bit with that. How much? Just use a little and shake and try until you find your right "sweet spot". I've even added just a dash of grain alcohol to it to help with facial disinfection after the shave, but one must be cautious as too much EToH will make for a more unpleasant burning sensation.~~ Vern ~~
I was born with nothing and managed to keep most of it.
