Thanked: 3Similar scent
I like scents similar to Aqua Velva's Ice Balm and Davidoff's Cool Water. I'm trying to decide which TOBS cologne and aftershave to get. So far it seems either Mr. Taylor or St. James are closest to those scents. I looked through the fragrances notes at classicshaving for TOBS and basenotes.net for Aqua Velva and Cool Water fragrances notes.
Oh I'm also considering Truefitt & Hill. I'm kind of hoping to avoid them considering their prices. And the one that seems closest is the 1805 fragrance.Last edited by Berticus; 07-27-2007 at 01:56 PM.

I was going to say 1805 is a little similar... but so much better! My wife liked the 1805 and bought me a bottle recently. You would NOT believe the comments I've had from women of all ages. Last night was almost embarassing... was in the supermarket buying some groceries, went to pay at the till and the young lady there says "What's that smell? Wow, it's gorgeous! Who is it? Who is it?" and after sniffing around points at me and proclaims "It's you!" I dread to think what other shoppers thought she was talking about... probably "dropped an air biscuit" as they sometimes say over here.
She wouldn't let me go until I'd written down the details for her so she could buy some for her husband.
I don't usually like getting undue attention, but I gotta say the T&H 1805 effect has surprised me in a good way.
I got a load of samples from T&H a couple of months back and did a review of all their scents here.
(Freshman is also similar, but more citrus topnotes.)

Thanked: 3I'm sorta interested too now. It seems I'll most likely get 1805, but the West Indian Limes could be really good.... Maybe I should just wing it with 1805.... Definitely would be a lot easier if I could just smell them somehow.

Just visit the T&H website, take the email addy of the office nearest your location and email them. The London office sent me pretty much all their range. (Of course, it helped that I promised to write up a review on SRP! )
I find those little samples bottles difficult to gauge when applying the scent. It just doesn't seem to react with the skin in the same way as an atomiser or spray. I definitely needed a second opinion (wife's opinion).
When I visited T&H in London I was able to try them out again, this time from the actual bottles with spray. I found it much easier to judge.

Thanked: 3I don't write to [email protected]? The only thing resembling a locator is the barbershop locations and they don't have their own email addresses. Though I suppose I could give them a call..

Yep, looks like they use just the one generic address -- I'm sure they will re-route to the correct office location if you write them.
The barbershop locations are also the shopfronts for their products. In London you walk through the door and there's a vestibule type area which sells all the products and paraphernalia, and if you carry on back through the curtains you get to the barber's area. Probably similar worlwide.

Thanked: 3I got my sample. It didn't come with 1805 scent, so I just bought that. However, I think I prefer the clubman scent over 1805. But I'd like a matching aftershave scent. Unfortunately there is no Truefitt & Hill Clubman aftershave balm. Any idea as to which aftershave (non-alcoholic preferred) smells the same or close enough?

I was wondering about the samples as well... I'll try writing to them, although I live in the US and I wonder if they'd ship samples internationally. I was wondering the same about some of the other major fragrance suppliers I see listed here, such as Penhaligon's - any way to sample the fragrances?
edit: For those who may have the same question, I called the US number for Penhaligons and got a very friendly rep on the phone who offered to send samples of their various men's fragrances. So, don't hesitate to do the same...Last edited by mental; 09-14-2007 at 05:20 PM.

Thanked: 3For US, they ship from their US barbershops - either Chicago or Las Vegas. I just shot them an email and they asked for my address. Didn't charge a thing, which is absolutely great!
