Thoughts of received samples - Part 2
This is the second of two posts concerning my thoughts on some samples that I received some time ago. One of the six ladies that participated in the first set of samples could not participate this time because of severe allergy problems. I am including the text of the first post for historical reference.
I thought I would post my thoughts on some samples that I received some time ago. This post only has cologne and shaving cream, future posts will also include face treatments and shaving soap.
I do want to also include the thoughts of six ladies at work who gladly participated in a study I conducted. The ladies were only told to write down the fragrances they would like to smell on a guy. The make up of the ladies was multi-cultural and covered a large age spectrum.
Here are my thoughts and the responses of the ladies:
Shave Cream
Geo. F. Trumper Rose - I did not like this at all. I thought that it was feminine. Only one of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper Coconut Oil - I really did not like this. I thought it smelled like suntan lotion. Only one of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper Almond - No one liked this one.
Geo. F. Trumper West Indian Extract of Limes - I thought this would work out nice for the Summer and Spring seasons. Five of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper GFT - My personal favorite. Five of the ladies liked it also.
Truefitt & Hill 1805 - This was OK. I could see myself using this, but it didn't seem to be in the same league at the GFT and Limes. Four of the ladies liked it. (One lady stated that she associated this fragrance with something a mature gentleman would wear.)
Cologne
Geo. F. Trumper Astor - I did not like this. I thought it was feminine. All six of the ladies liked it. (This surprised me.)
Geo. F. Trumper Sandalwood - I thought this would be OK for Winter, but way too overpowering for Summer. Four of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper West Indian Extract of Limes - I was OK with this as a Summer cologne. Only two of the ladies liked it. (Two others liked the same fragrance in the shaving cream, but not the cologne.)
Penhaligon's Douro - I did not like this at all. It seemed to be more for a younger guy, not one in the early graying stages. Only two ladies liked it.
Here are my thoughts for the following:
Shave Cream
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort – I really liked this. I put it second only to the GFT noted previously. Three of the five ladies liked this.
Cologne
Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather – I really like this scent. It seemed like it could be used for both winter and summer. Four of the ladies liked this.
Geo. F. Trumper GFT – This is my personal favorite cologne of all. I would consider this a summer scent, however, it could be used as a winter scent also. Unfortunately, I did not give the ladies a chance to give me their thoughts on it. (I sent the sample to Colleen for her to ‘play’ with. She really liked it also.)
Penhaligon's Opus 1870 – I really didn’t like this. It may work for a younger man, but not for me. Only two of the ladies liked it.
Penhaligon's English Fern – I thought this was way too feminine. Four of the ladies liked it. It is worth noting that this is marketed for women also.
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet – I thought that this was okay, but not something that I would wear. Only two of the ladies liked it.
Skin Treatment
Geo. F. Trumper Extract of Limes Skin Food – I really like the feel of putting this on my face after shaving, however, I really don’t like the scent. Only one of the ladies liked the scent.
Geo. F. Trumper Coral Skin Food – As noted above, I really like the feel of putting this on my face after shaving, however, I really don’t like the scent. I do think that this scent is better than the Extract of Limes. Only one of the ladies liked the scent. (I will have to find out what other Skin Food scents are available.)
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort Aftershave Balm – This didn’t really seem to have a scent, or at least, the scent left the container. None of the ladies could pick up a scent for this.
My favorites:
Summer cologne - Geo. F. Trumper GFT
Winter cologne - Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather
I did like the Geo. F. Trumper GFT shaving cream, but I prefer using shaving soap. (I do have some samples from Colleen that I am currently trying out. I may post my thoughts on these later.)
I like the feel of the Geo. F. Trumper Skin Food on my face after shaving, but didn't care for the fragrances of the samples.
I would like to publically thank all the companies that sent me samples, as well as, the ladies at work who considered this as 'aroma therapy'.

Thanked: 22This is slightly but are you saying that you or other guys use shaving soaps in accordance with seasons?
So much to learn in so little time, I thought you could just find a soap and scent that you like and stick with that all year round

Actually, I am experimenting with summer and winter colognes. I never considered doing it for shaving creams.
As a side note, I am finding that I tend to choose different fragrances of Colleen's shaving soap depending on whether I shave at night, or in the morning. (For instance, Lime Margarita definitely opens up the sinuses and wakes one up in the morning, whereas Highlander tends to have a calming effect for nightly shaves.)

In a word, yes. Many of us have numerous scents of soaps/creams that we rotate depending on the season or time of year. For example, Colleen has both Lemon Verbena and Lime Margarita that are great from late spring to late summer. After that, a switch to Autumn Spice, Desert Ironwood, Cinnamon Coffee Hazelnut or something with a heavier/headier scent is called for. MamaBear also has a variety of soaps that is oriented to autumn and winter use and other's for summer and spring. Not that you have to use them that time of the year, it is all about what you or your significant other likes to smell. Just keep in mind that some of the scents are sold year round, whereas others are not. For example, Colleen's Autumn Spice only comes out about once a year, for maybe four months (but it is worth the wait).
I am speaking only for myself of course. The truth is, it's all about you
