I think that some bay rum were mislabeled. If I remember correctly, Dominica was one of them. I can assure you, in order to smell like bay rum, it has to have P. racemosa (bay rum tree) oil. L. nobilis smells good too but it does not smell like bay rum.

    Al raz.

I have no experience with this stuff, so I'd appreciate comments from anyone who has any knowledge about this.

More or less will not ruin it, some people change the ratio to suit their needs. Less glycerine will reduce the moisturizing properties, better for summer time. More will thicken the bayrum and make it more moisturizing, better for winter time. Ostensibly if you put enough in, it could cause your skin to blister, but as long as you stay under 1teaspoon/ounce I think you'd be safe.
Thanks jockeys, I'll try it tonight!

    Fccexpert,
If I distil, what type of yield should I expect?
i.e. If I start out with 16 oz of Rum, at the end I should expect about X oz of product.
I know you can’t give me an exact number, as that depends on my technique. I’m just trying to figure out how big of a container I need for the end product.
    Thanks.

for more spiciness, simply add more spice, e.g. cinnamon or clove.

Red face Ok, so I'm a Dumb A.

This is my first attempt at making my own Bay Rum (or any after shave). I used Jockeys recipe and the distillation method. I also added a couple of pieces of orange rind (it seemed like a good idea at the time).
After it was done cooking, it smelled nice, but I only had about 2 oz of product (started with 12 oz) and was not overly happy. I let it cool and then bottled it and added 2 drops of glycerin per oz. I then read that the orange can’t be distilled, only pressed. DOH!
The next day I used some after my shave. No burn. I then realized I had distilled out the EO and that was it. I had a bottle of EO and glycerin. DOH!!
So I added Bacardi dark rum back to the original 12 oz and glycerin (2 drops/ oz). I used it today and was happier with the end product.
However, after about 30 min. my face was itchy. What do I need to change? (I mean about this, not everything in my life. That would be a long list.)

My home made bayrum smells great.. First it's clove and cinnamon and then it fades to cinnamon. But the scent only lasts for an hour tops. My girlfriend says she still smells it up close after a few fours.

But is there any way to get (the next batch) to leave a longer smell?

i have two batches one i used a lot of rhum, cin, black pepper and star anis plus added oils of clove basil sweet orange and bay . the next is only rhum and vevitar , bay and sandelwood I personaly like the first but i think my mussus like the seconed more, hard to tell since she doesnt give me her opinion

as far as the essential oils go, i use a lot because i am looking for an all day scent not a fast fade

by the way can anyone try to explain how exactly classic bay rhum should smell. I am making and using this stuff but have never even smelled the original so no real idea if i am on the right track.
