I use witch hazel all the time. I recently got a bottle of thayer's and I am surprised by the difference between it and the drugstore brand. It seems to be a little thicker and has a different smell. It also tones my skin faster and longer. My skin still feels taut by the next time I go to shave. It smells like licorice to me. Not a smell I like by any stretch of the imagination, but it goes away fast enough that I don't mind it too much. I can't recall which kind of thayer's it was, though.

Thanked: 155Most Thayer's varieties contain Aloe Vera extract, and most of the "alcohol free" varieties contain glycerine (I put alcohol free in quotes, because chemically, glycerine is an alcohol; it is just not considered one for labeling purposes). Both of these compounds will make the liquid thicker. As far as I can tell, there are no anise scented versions, but many do contain other fragrences, some of which might have a similar smell. All of the alcohol free versions contain other preservatives, such as citric acid, ascorbic acid or tochophyrol acetate.
