    Default Rash after shaving?

I wanted to share a personal experience with shaving and aftershaves with everyone in case there is anyone that might have had the same problem I use to. About 15 years ago I used to shave with and electric razor (with it set to it's least close shave) because if I tried to use any other kind of razor, I would break out with a very bad rash on my throat area. If I tried to shave a second day in a row, I would have about 20 little bloody spots on my neck! I would still get a little rash from the electric but it wasn't near as bad and I could still shave a second day in a row. I also tried every kind of aftershave known to man and finally figured I would just have to suffer with it. One day, a friend told me he had the same problem and went to see a dermatologist about it and was told to try using Dr. Tichener's anticeptic mouthwash as an aftershave. I know...this sounds a little crazy but I tried it and it worked for me! I've been using it ever since without any problems. If anyone should decide to try this, just beware!...It stings a good bit at first and your eyes may feel the strong peppermint vapors rising up off your face and neck. But, after a second or two, the stinging will stop and your face and neck will feel like you just walked into a freezer! I hope ther's someone out there that this may help.

I have very similar symptoms. I'm a bit scared, but I'll give it a shot!

Thanks for the idea. Another tip that helped me was the use of Gold Bond Medicated Powder. I rub that into my neck area when I get those bumps and it works well and feels good to boot.

The use of mouthwash as an antiseptic for the skin has been reported previously, there was recently a thread about it: http://straightrazorpalace.com/after...halitosis.html . Besides the stickiness and the scent, Listerine works great too. However, I believe that rather than trying to correct the symptoms, you may want to address the cause of the problem. Based on the information you provided, I believe that you may be using too much pressure when you shave the neck area. If the angle is not optimal, the slightest pressure may lead to a rash similar to what you describe. I would recommend to ease on the pressure, keep a good angle and let the razor do its job.

    Al raz.

Dr. Tichener's is essentiallly Alcohol and water. Specifically, it is 70% SDA 38-B, water and arnica extract. One of the denaturants allowed in SDA 38-B is peppermint oil, so that is where the peppermint comes from. Arnica from a group of plants that includes sunflowers, but the one invovled here is probably Arnica Montana. You can probably get the same effect, minus the minty fresh flavor, with 70% ethanol rubbing alcohol. The arnica may help reduce inflamation, but that is unproven.
