Old school aftershave
Hello to everyone! Yes, I'm new to this forum and look forward to becoming more knowledgeable on the art of the straight razor. I'm sure my first question has been asked to many times from new members but here it comes anyway. What is the overall aftershave lotion used by the old school barbers called? Every time I have been to a barber over the years its the same scent and I think it my be blue in color.

Depends on the barber I suppose. Some names to look for are bay rum, Pinaud clubman, and lilac vegetal.
The blue stuff you're noticing my be the Barbicide

Pinaud Clubman is what I always associate with old-school barber shops. I love it.

Blue? Maybe Aqua Velva? The majority of barbers around here, or the ones that USED to be around here, always used Clubman.
Depends on what country you're in, too, I suppose. You may be thinking about blue Floid, which is a bit like Aqua Velva from what I hear.

Gentlemen,
From what I have observed in the old time barbershops still operating today, the standard aftershaves still are Pinaud Clubman and Lilac Vegetable. Here and there I have seen Florida Water, too.
In my own shaving kingdom, a plastic bottle of Pinaud Clubman keeps company with aftershaves from Truefitt & Hill, Geo F. Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Woods of Windsor, Spanish Floid, Brummel, Agua Lavanda Puig and many others.
Pinaud Clubman is a way of life, gentlemen, plastic bottle and all.

There are different types of aftershave. When you select one
keep in mind you just shaved off the top layer of skin and in some
cases a bit more.
If you shave every day and try for a BBS every day you may find that
a product that combines a disinfecting splash of alcohol with perfume
and stuff will turn your face into a red strawberry.
If you are shaving for Sunday go-to-meeting once a week with branch water
you may well need the antiseptic quality of alcohol to keep from getting
a serious infection.
There are some modern balms that split the difference.
Your face will tell you much more than your nose.
PS: I remember the smell of hair goo more than after shave stuff
that was Witch hazel.
