Thanked: 0Barber formula
I was getting my hair cut a couple of days ago from my favorite barber, you know, the kind that shaves your sideburns and the back of your neck with a straight razor and talks football, country western music and why our troops should be in Afghanistan, when his bottle of aftershave ran dry. To refill it, he reached under the counter and pulled out a jug of Witch Hazel, filled it two-thirds full of the Witch Hazel then topped it off with Pinaud.
Needless to say, I immediately went to the store and bought a bottle of Witch Hazel and made up the same formula for myself. I had always wondered why when using just the Pinaud aftershave, the aroma never lasted as long as when I went to the barber. Now I know. The aroma from the witch hazel/pinaud mixture lasts all day long. Now, at 5 pm, all I have to do is close my eyes and inhale and I can imagine myself just getting out of that barber chair. I've even gone so far as to mix the witch hazel with my Bay Rum with the same long lasting effect.
Has anyone else tried this or do you have other formulas for your aftershaves?

Thanked: 0I don't know. I've never used witch hazel before. In fact, I was fairly surprised when I saw my barber pull out the jug of witch hazel. However, when I combined the two, I liked the result.

Rich,
Which brand of Witch Hazel are you using? Thayer's? I have their Lavender, so that wouldn't mix! I tried Dickinson's, couldn't get past the smell.

I updated the recipe some time ago, but i don't use it much, since I got great aftershave gel from Korres...
Anyways:
50ml 100% aloe gel
1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
1 teaspoon marigold oil
that's it. You can put a few drops of essential oil in it for smell and good skin properties, but do a research a bit, not every oil is benefitial to the skin, and some of them are qute harmfull... I use ylangylang, lavander, jasmine...e.t.c.

Thanked: 0I'm using the Dickinson to mix with my aftershaves. But I'll check with Walt, my barber, and ask which one he uses. When I saw him making his formula he was freely pouring from a gallon jug of witch hazel into a separate 8oz. dispenser.

I am cheap so I got plain witch hazel from Rite Aid and poured in some aloe gel I have had in the fidge for several years. It desolved well and no problems. I use it mostly because my family is anti aftershave in the AM.
