Have you tried the pinaud special reserve? That stuff smells great, I just got a bottle on Friday and I am loving the smell of it.

As an alternative view I always conclude a shave with the scent of the cream I was using. I thought that was the point of spending money on a good scent in the cream. If I mixed any scent with the cream scent I'd smell like a fruity dessert.

The only scent that I've tried that SWMBO likes on me is Curve Crush. All the "classic" scents she can't stand. She has learned to tolerate Alt Innsbruuk but doesn't love it. Every sample I got in the Trumpers sample pack I ordered was "old man" to her. She doesn't even like the smell of the lime skin food, although she didn't call that one an old man smell.

The only soap/cream I have the she actually likes the scent of is Conk Almond.

So pretty much I just gave up and keep wearing the Curve, except for the few times that I actually shave during the day, then it's Alt.

Ah the immortal "Old Man Smell" debate, I would only add that most truly old men that I ever encountered smelled of cheap cigars or pipe tobacco, stale beer and the farts thereof.

Now that I'm approaching codgerdom myself, I would only offer the following advice to the original poster:

Wear what you like, the only person you really have to impress is SWMBO and generally speaking unless you smell really bad she won't say much. If this is the case (at least in my house) you've passed the smell check for the day. If she remarks that you smell nice, remember what you're wearing and continue to wear it.

I agree that most of the modern metrosexual crap smells like woman's cologne on a man. Although Acqua Di Gio and Cool Water are not so girly and seem to play well with Aqua Velva Classic.

I think you'll find that most of us here are Clubman, Bay Rum, Aqua Velva, Old Spice guys and there's certainly nothing wrong with any of those. I also dabble in things like English Leather, British Stering, Jovan Musk, etc. But yeah, at the end of the day, wear what you like.
The older I get, the better I was

Someone's going to get rich some day by buying cases of Pinaud (your example, especially), pouring them into fancy glass bottles, slapping a Victorian-artsy label with a pompous name on the front, and selling it for ten times what Pinaud gets. I really like the Special Reserve, as long as I remember to use it as a cologne and not an aftershave. It's got some staying power that isn't apparent at application. On the other hand, I thought I had several favorite scents, all in that price range ... until my Trumper's and Truefit & Hill samplers arrived. I'd say half of both I rejected at first whiff - just not my style - and the others didn't smell all that promising in the bottle, but since I had them I gave them a try. The difference is stunning.

As I think I mentioned in another post, I made "lures" (animal attractants/scents) for trappers and animal control professionals in the '80s, and I spent a great deal of time and money developing and testing them. It's no great feat to find something that will smell good to a particular animal and catch it's attention, but that isn't enough to keep it around the trap long enough to catch it unless it's young and dumb. It's a whole different thing to make a scent so complex and curiously attractive that it draws an animal closer and closer and holds its attention - and the ingredients to make the latter do indeed cost many times more than the simple scents and take a lot of trial and error to develop, as many of the trace ingredients are somewhat rare. To me, that neatly parallels the difference in the Old Spice scents and those in Trumper's class. I like them both, myself, but they aren't in the same class of "attractants".

When you actually are an old man and thus are a bit bored with the old man scents, you may (or may not) feel differently. That's not to say that at 58 I'm going to rush out and buy a full compliment of Axe products.

Think I should spike my hair(s)? Really? Cuz I think I'd be crazy kool wid da spike hairs! No, I dont luk ghey that way LOLRFLMAO.

I admittedly don't act my age, but I don't stray all that far from it either. It just isn't seemly.

Wink To heck with fruity smells.......

I love clubman aftershave, lime sec and bay rum. When I'm not wearing that it's good ol old spice. I love smelling like a man not a boy.But then I'm 47. Still.. it's a great kept secret.I only pay 10 bucks tops for my wonderful aromas which are like crack to me. Why is everyone so paranoid about smellin like a man anyway? What's up with society today ?

I did a fragrance profiling evening at Penhaligons a while back, and they showed me that theres no such thing as scents suiting older people better. There are certain scents that will last longer on your skin though, and will mature differently after a few hours, but thats about it.

I agree with Obie, wear what you want and like!

I personally have a mixture of older and newer scents. I like Penahligons Endymion and Trumpers Spanish Leather, but I also have a few more contemporary scents, like Aqua di Gio. Its really down to what you prefer!
