Mostly what I learned from splashing alcohol on my face was not to splash alcohol on my face.

Alcohol goes down the throat, witch hazel goes on the face.

    Works for me.

The one thing I really liked about the AOS aftershave (that I wish I had this week) is that it did that with no alcohol! (TSA confiscated it that thursday morning)

    Josh,
I hope you're not surprised that acid (even a relatively mild one like vitamin C) will sting? Try patting a bit of lemon juice on your face after a shave ...I'll bet the sensation is curiously close to that of a high content alcohol aftershave.

Actually the first time was quite a surprised...thats before I read it contains vitamin C. Like rich said in the mornings it reall wakes you up and feels pretty neat, but it doesnt dry out your skin like the alcohol based aftershaves do, and it helps moisturize the skin since its a cream like balm. I loved it.
