Thread: Question from a complete aftershave newb

I have never used aftershave before but I am interested in trying it out. There is a lot of good advice on scents here but, despite searching, I can't seem to find info on the correct way to apply it. I'm kind of embarassed to ask but I don't want to be that guy. You know, the one you smell/taste well before you actually see him.

So how much is needed and what is the 'correct' way to apply it after a shave? Correct is in quotes because I sure a lot of this comes down to personal preference. I'm just looking for some general advice.

How much is a matter of taste, plus some brands are stronger than others. For something like pinaud clubman I'm guessing I use maybe half a teaspoon. Put a splash on one hand, rub your hands together, then slap and rub them on your cheek and neck. If you're using a cream-style aftershave like nivea balm or Harris face milk the process is similar but usually involves less screaming.

Hey the screaming is fun!!

You use enough to treat the whole area that you just shaved so it dries/absorbs almost instantly. Aftershave scents are usually not THAT strong and they disappear quickly.

Thanks to you all. I figured it was a simple as that but wanted to make sure. Maybe it will help other new guys as well.

The real issue in my mind is not about fragrance, but whether to use a traditional after-shave or an alcohol free after-shave balm. The balms usually are loaded with moisturizers, which this 60 year old skin needs. I'd rather have my alcohol in nice Pinot Noir.

I myself would be in the same place as you not knowing much and I commend you for placing the post out there for people to hear it. As like in most places, you don't want to be the one to first ask, but others will step up and say that they really didn't know either and didn't want to ask.

I'm am really liking the Proraso pre shave cream as an aftershave. It gives a real cool feeling to your skin and a fresh eucalyptus aroma that fades fairly quickly. You can use your normal colone over top of it. It relieves any irritation you may have caused by shaving too rough.
